since all the rain this fall and the canceled baseball that has resulted I am asking myself why does every high school pays million of dollars to have a turf football field, but only a few, Highland Park and McKinney Boyd, as for as I know get turf baseball fields?

From Varsity S****r to 7th grade football ( and younger) everyone gets to play all their games on a turf field. It drains properly and can be played on 2 mins after the rains stops.

Last week Frisco canceled all games at all high schools because three days after the rain stopped the fields were still unplayable.

anyone else fell like a second class citizen?

I get that purist like to play on grass, its great to watch a game on grass on a sunny afternoon.

We seem to lose a lot of games and even more practice time because of it. Our high school hasn't been on the field in three weeks because of the rain, not even for practice. Pitchers who are going to showcases in the fall for recruiting purposes don't even have a mound to throw off for bullpen sessions.

since the HS teams don't have TV contracts I can't believe they take in more money than they cost the school. even a few thousand 8 dollar tickets can't cover million dollar turf fields.

to add insult to injury, the school district has order the booster club to take down a storage shed we bought the baseball coach because its not "fair and equal"
More and more schools are building multi-purpose indoor facilities that can accommodate baseball, such as drop down nets for hitting and pitching, and 50 yard turf fields that you can at least take infield on.

It isn't the same as a full outdoor practice, obviously, but coaches can get some work in. Both HS's in the Northwest ISD have these type facilities.

When I was at Mansfield Summit, the District AD actually asked me what I thought about putting field turf on the baseball fields. I told her that I was all for it! She said the HC at Tiger High was against it...figures!

If I was given the option, I'd have it done in a heartbeat!

FD... at least you didn't have to play there for 4 years...

Sorry for the rant guys, this is my second child in this school district, just tired of being second class.

Unfortunately, it is like that in most places. That is the reality of coaching high school baseball in Texas. It will never change and I am a much happier person now that I have accepted that. I love football, even more so now because I do not have to coach it!

I have fought that battle in the past and it got me nowhere. Lucky for me, I have a good situation at my current school because every sport is successful and every sport is important. The head coaches all support each other and so does our administration...which is the key!

To me, as a baseball coach, I have two choices. 1) Sit around and whine about how football has everything and we have nothing and are second class citizens...or 2) Focus on things that I can control to make my program the best it can be, putting the kids first and making sure as many of them as possible have a great HS Baseball experience.

Now I know that I won't make everyone happy and that every kid is not going to leave with fond memories. But if I am not trying to accomplish my 2 said objectives, then I can not go home at night and look myself in the eye.

Do things happen that frustrate me? Sure? But I won't let them win, I won't let that situation get the best of me. When the bell that ends 2nd period rings, it is the best sound of the day...because that means it is time to head down and get to baseball class. Rain or shine it's the best part of the day!
