I use a Rawlings Hit Stick 33 in. for cold weather batting practice, and will use in our wood bat tourn. Feels good and pretty balanced. Was 39.95 at local sporting goods store

Try a bamboo bat.. little over $60 and supposed to be stronger then steel (according to their website)

We imported the bamboo bats from Japan in 1984.

The Japanese HS coaches used the bat as a training device.

If you do not hit the ball on the "sweet" spot, the bat will sting your hands.

Personally the SSK ash or maple is the best bat.

I got some from Barnstable Bats in Mass. Great service and people to work with. Web site has info about buying wood bats that was helpful. Great selection, solid product and their prices are reasonable.

Bats are made out of wood, they will break. Major leaguers break on average 60 bats a year. It is all relative to your game, ie swing at an inside pitch and hit it off the handle and your bound to break it. After 6 years of wood bats with 2 sons there is no unbreakable bat. As for experience buying a bat, buy from a bat manufacturer where possible and perhaps a few, you will get a break on bulk purchase. Visit a manufacturer and try the bat for feel, no 2 bats are the same. Remember this is his business and will not give you any BS. Try not to buy a painted bat from the local big box sports store, paint hides blemishes. The most expensive bat can still make good fire wood on a chilly night. Grandpa always said you get what you pay for still holds true.

Tip, my one son bought 2 Mizzuno bamboo bats with 90 day guarantees, hehe, one is going back already.

60 bats broken in a season seems like a lot---one every two and three quarter games

I find that number hard to believe---where do you get that stat?

Let me clarify, might be a few less than 60 but I got the number from a manufacturer who supplies a few major league players. These guys orders 5 dozen at a time for everything from spring training, B-P, and games. I'm sure there could the odd charity fundraiser that is given away. Hell, my 18 yr old broke 17 last year alone and he has already broke 3 this year in 13 games. I seen a game a few weeks ago where I swear close to a dozen bats broke, one was my kid.

Moisture content of the wood has a lot to do with it.

Or perhaps the guys using the bats do not know how to hit with wood?

Most of the teams attending our wood bat tournaments use Mad Dog Bats. We have a full sponsor program with them as they allow those coming to our site/events to use our sponsorship program and get bats for $25-28 when they sell on their site for $60+. Even the maple bats.

i'm going back and forth on whether i should buy a bamboo bat or not. i haven't had a wooden bat in a while (i skipped my freshman year of high school ball, bad mistake but i was overbooked and i'm transferring anyway), and i've been using aluminum in the league i've been playing in. new york law's apparently banned metal, so it's gonna be all wood for me.

i also had some great experiences with a friend's hickory bat not too long ago.

they get like 800 at bats a year and the pitchers are throwing 90+ mph. it doesn't seem too unreasonable

Ok I know this is a players only thread, Wheels may have exaggerated but 800 bats a year, have you ever seen a 90+ mph pitch? If you have seen it a few times and you know how to hit properly, it is not such a big thing.

800 bats for each player per year would have the tree supporters up in arms!

Place the bat on the floor, take a "glass" coke bottle and rub the bat including the handle.
this will make the ash bat hard.

if you are at the ball park, then find a metal post and rub the bat on the iron post.

I am sorry but I have not heard anything well about these bats. A couple of friends of mine all have one and one kid that plays alot more than others broke the bat within a few months. Needless to say he spent 60 bucks for a 3 month bat.

No real meaning, for me it is the most exciting pitch in the game. 3-2 count.....next pitch SOMETHING is going to happen.......good or bad, but something is going to happen. Fastball seems to be most young pitchers best pitch.......

i like viper bats. they are out of washington but they deliver fast. they are pretty durable for bamboo if you are allowed to use them, i dont know about the other models but im sure the quality is probably good. they don't supply major leaguers yet, but are a great bat and you can find some of them for around $40 if you don't mind using some of their "sale" bats. those may have cosmetic differences but hold up well and i love my viper bat.
