I use a wood bat off the tee, in the cages and from time to time I use it in live pitching. I use my Louisville Platinum in games and bp before games. I use my home made bat in the on deck circle. (yes, I did have a LOT of free time over Christmas break!) I made it out of a Maple Tree in my back yard. You think a Louisville wood bat is heavy, try swinging this thing!

You will lose a little bit of leverage in your swing (power) by using the shorter bat, but if you are comfortable with it, use it.
Cub1jon, there is no way that I would encourage you to swing a 34" bat. At your size, I'd recommend either a 32" or 33" bat. If you're swinging wood, you'll probably have better success starting out with a 32".

I have a number of players who swing 34" bats, but those players are all like 6'3" and 210, or bigger. I have several guys who stand around 5"10" and 175 or so that have tried 34's and they can't swing them well enough. Most of those guys swing 33s, and a few swing 32s.

Remember, having a controlled swing with BATSPEED is what you are striving for.
I forgot to mention that if you're looking for a wood bat that is very durable, check out the bats made by the Brett Brothers Bat Company. These bats come in either maple or bamboo, but also feature a handle that is wrapped in fiberglass to strengthen it. They are tough to break. You can even use them in some, but not all, wood bat tournaments.

cub1jon - my son, who is about your age and size (a tad smaller) uses strictly wood for offseason workouts. We got it from Dick's Sporting goods and it's about $30. I forget the brand but can let you know if you're interested. It's a 2 tone finish though; black barrel, brown handle. Might be Rawlings? Anyway, it's 33" but he can handle it just fine because it's lighter than most 33" bats.
