I just had an interesting discussion with a college baseball coach. We were talking about kids who work hard, but sometimes not smart. By not smart, I mean practicing poor habits/mechanics exc. In addition, some drills seam to provide better on the field results than others. For example, my son used the overload-underload workout for swinging his bat and saw remarkable results in one months time. I was wondering if other people could share practice routines/drills that provide the most bang for the time spent practicing. Sometimes I feel like your kid practices an aspect of the game, but are not sure if what you practiced actually made you a better player(this is especially true taking endless rounds of BP). Any feed back on what drills or routines provided the greatest improvement in any aspect of the game would be greatly appreciated.

My son is a LHP/1B. He likes taking bucket after bucket of gound balls. We use two buckets to eliminate the throws and speed up the process. This type of individual work with high reps has greatly improved his fielding. He says he can really focus on reading the spin and therefore the hop of the ball by taking so many at one time. Also I can roll balls to his backhand more quickly and accuratly than trying to fungo 100 or so.
