Maybe the Cubs can try and get Garland back from the White Sox. Can anyone dig up washed up middle reliever Matt Karchner? Now that was a good trade. The Cubs trade their #1 pitching prospect and draft pick for a middle reliever named Matt Karchner 5 years ago. This trade hasn't been mentioned to often as one of the worst trades in Cub history, but it should start to get some major consideration. I think this thread could go along way in mentioning all the poor trades the Cubs have made in their history.

Fastball, I guess I should've started a White Sox thread as well, in regards to all their poor trades also. I forgot to mention the Cubs other top prospect. His name was Dontrell Willis. A 6'5 lefty that throws in the high 90's. I guess there was no room for him in the Cubs rotation either. I think he won 23 games last year for Florida. Give me a break!

Actually, I think that the Cubbies did themselves proud in this deal. You have to remember that they got Derrick Lee in that trade. I would do that all day long for an everyday player of his caliber who puts up the numbers he put up....and should continue to do so for another 6-7 years...One of the best defensive 1st basemen, too, in all of Major League baseball.

See...Even White Sox fans can be objective!
Beenthere,

After I picked myself off the floor reading your post which actually said something positive about the Cubs, I'm not positive that you're correct. With my aging memory, I thought that the Cubs got Matt Clement in the D. Willis deal. If I turn out to be correct, I think that deal was also well thought out. Hindsight is always 50-50, but it takes a psychic to project that D.W. would turn out to be such a superstar pitcher. When you have a club that you expect to contend for a division title, you do what you have to to give you team the chance to win now. IMO, Matt Clement was that kind of pitcher.

If you are right and it was D. Lee that came over to the Cubs, it obviously was an even better deal.
I also remember a Dontrelle Willis comment after being asked if he thought the Cubs underestimated his value....It went something like "I suprised myself....I had no idea things would go as quickly and well as they did." Either way Rosy......I'm picking myself up off the floor as well. Beenthere, maybe you can teach and old dog (or HSBBW poster) new tricks. Remember, Beenthere is originally a Cub fan. I thought the trade included Clement and Alf. trying to remember the D. Lee trade....it must have been a steal.

Derek Lee wasn't in the Willis trade. The bottom line is Clemente is no longer in Chicago, and Willis continues to win in Florida. I guess the Cubs didn't need a 6'5 left hander in their rotation, right? When was the last time the Cubs had a very good left handed pitcher in their rotation? Glendon Rusch doesn't count. The Cubs and Sox have been clueless for years. The White Sox finally figured it out last year, but let's see how long that lasts as well.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Padres released Mark Prior from his minor league contract. He hasn't thrown a pitch since April. The way he broke down, and the seriousness of his 2 shoulder surgeries makes one wonder.
