TX-Husker promted this one with a post on Rangers trades.

What are the worst trades off all time (not including cash deals)? Here's a few:

Healthcliffe Slocum (to the Mariners) for Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe (to the Red Sox)

Danny Cater (to the Red Sox) for Sparky Lyle (to the Yankees)

Kevin Stocker (to the Rays) for Bobby Abreau (to the Phillies)

Ernie Broglio (to the Cubs) for Lou Brock (to the Cardinals)

Milt Pappas (to the Reds) for Frank Robinson (to the Orioles)

** The dream is free. Work ethic sold separately. **

Some great ones listed so far....

I know it said no cash, but the worst trade of all time was Babe Ruth for cash.

Bartolo Colon to Expos from Indians for Cliff Lee (Cy Young winner last year), Grady Sizemore (All-Star, MVP candidate), and Brandon Phillips (decent player). At the time of the deal, Brandon Phillips was the most coveted player by the Indians. The future is often highly unpredictable when young players are involved.
- Nolan Ryan traded by the Mets with Frank Estrada, Don Rose, and Leroy Stanton to the Angels for Jim Fregosi.

- Mets trade pitcher Scott Kazmir and infielder Jose Diaz to the Devil Rays for Bartolome Fortunato and Victor Zambrano.

- Tigers trade John Smoltz to the Braves for pitcher Doyle Alexander.

- Dodgers trade pitcher Pedro Martinez to the Expos for Delino DeShields.

- Expos trade Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips and Lee Stevens to the Cleveland Indians for Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew.

- Giants trade Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser to the Twins for A.J. Pierzynski.

- Cubs trade Lou Brock to the Cards for Ernie Broglio

- Red Sox send Jeff Bagwell to Houston for reliever Larry Andersen

- A's send Mark McGwire to Cardinals for pitchers T.J. Mathews, Eric Ludwick and Blake Stein

- Padres send Fred McGriff to Braves for OF Melvin Nieves and pitchers Donnie Elliott and Vince Moore

I think that one of the worst trades in history was made by Baltimore when they traded:

P Curt Schilling
P Pete Harnish
OF Steve Finley

to Houston for

1B Glenn Davis

Schilling,Harnish and Finley all became all-stars and Davis was damaged goods with a bad back as soon as he got to Baltimore.

That's the one I was trying to remember for this thread. What a disappointment Davis turned out to be.

I'd like to hear what a Giants fan thought about that, spizzle, but some of us Pierzynski watchers thought he just wanted away from the Giants. He showed he wasn't happy there at all. AJ can be...um...."different". Wink

WARNING: NAME DROP ALERT

He used to work out at the same gym as my son in the off-season, probably still does. Jr. said he was nice.

I actually know his folks. They actually still soft toss into a net in the backyard. They speak very highly of him. Smile

Did he ever show up at DPHS to kick it with the boys?

Orlando, as I Giants fan I have to say that is the worst trade of bad trades! Imagine what the Giants would be like if they had Joe Nathan and the other two these last four years. Piersynski was a very bad malignancy for the Giants, perhaps the worst trade the franchise has made in their time in San Francisco.

Now do you know what Giants fans think?
Well, I'm a Giants fan, and I think it looks like a bad trade more in hindsight than it appeared at the time.

Here's a good explanation: MLBtraderumors

My company had about equal numbers of employees in Minneapolis and San Francisco area at the time of the trade. Those who were familiar with Pierzynski predicted that his personality wouldn't fit the Giants. On the other hand, Twins fans weren't very excited with the incoming pitchers, and that the Twins paid cash in addition to Pierzynski.

Did you know how many innings that Joe Nathan pitched in College for Stony Brook? -

- about 2! - He was a shortstop here on LI when he played at Stony Brook U(when it was still D3) so even us locals that would attend a few games didnt get to see him pitch in college!
