Grasscutter, I know you were referring to Jupiter, but 2012 WB was referring to the Fort Myers tournament. The Canes at Jupiter went 4 and 2. Seven players from Virgina played for the Canes including Denis Buckley (McLean/uncommitted) Jake Cave (Hampton/LSU), Austin Chrismon (Newport News/ECU), Sean Fitzgerald (McLean/Notre Dame), Eric Payne (Richmond/South Carolina), Corey Ramsey (Chesterfield/uncommitted) and Nick Thompson (Chesapeake/uncommitted). One of the more interesting games occurred on Sunday night at Roger Dean Stadium (Spring Training site for the Cardinals and Marlins). The Canes faced the Royals Scout Team and threw DeAndre Smelter, the top uncommitted 2010 player, Austin Chrismon and Jave Cave. More than 30 pro scouts were scouting the players, especially DeAndre who threw in the mid 90's. Austin's curve ball was working, and I am sure pleased Coach Godwin (ECU) who was in attendance. Jake closed, recorded a save and scored the initial and winning run. The Canes won 2-0. Sean Fitzgerald threw well in his two outings, as did Corey Ramsey.

I think the Richmond Braves finished 2-2 in their pool and did not make the playoff rounds. The Canes were being watched closely but got off to a rough start and also finished 2-2 and out of the playoffs. They stayed to play two consolation games where they fared better.

Conner Kaufman of the Braves (L.C. Bird, Cornell commit) threw a 5-inning no hitter over the weekend.

The Canes played very poorly on opening day in all aspects of the game, pitching, hitting and defense. Of course, the opposition had something to do with that.

Additionally, the 16U Canes (not the 17U Canes) won the wooden bat tournament in East Cobb (reflecting the pre-tournament writeups that suggested the relative strength of the team may be juniors, not seniors, and a year away).
