Some college athletes have the opportunity to join a pro league and make millions per year for several years. Most Olympic athletes are in their prime during college. They have limited years of earning appearances fees after college. Like football, only a small percentage of college swimmers and other Olympic athletes are so elite they will earn a lot of money.

A neighborhood kid made Team USA in her sport while in high school. Endorsement money was placed in a trust fund. She played her sport in college. At twenty-seven she's still on Team USA (probably retiring now). She still has endorsements. But it's not like she's getting wealthy off them enough to retire. Her sport has become her career in coaching and consulting. The endorsements will probably disappear as she disappears from playing.

I just find it very distasteful (mild words for how I really feel) as they send football teams to Ireland in the middle of school, schedule tournaments during finals and sell the rights to ladders at the Final 4 - making millions - but talk about crap like this.

Then there's all of the other stuff...jerseys, video games, etc.., etc...  Their TV ads about student athletes (aka Billie Jean King ad) make my blood boil.

I am not a fan of the NCAA at all.  This guy needs to keep his mouth shut as the article asserts.  The HBO guy made a fool of him about a year ago.

They are going to be obliterated.

Why is such a dominate program playing a program like this anyway.  Pick on someone your own size.

I was actually quite surprised when I first read about the money awarded to college Olympians who won medals.

Just doesn't make sense, can't pay for the books but gold, silver and bronze metals is ok!

I can still remember the first time the thought "What a crooked bunch" the ncaa is.back during northwesterns finally playing football again (mid 90's) they had a real good college RB. His major was Theatrocal arts I think. The ncaa refused to let him accept a part in a movie if he were paid for it. For goodness sakes being in/@ that type of stuff was the kids major. The whole situation with $ and olympics will get settled once the ncaa figures out some rule that gets them some type of cut of the money.

When Steve Alford was playing basketball for Indiana he was suspended for allowing his likeness "a picture" to be used in a calendar for charity. Is anything more foolish. They should have been commending him for participating.

Even worse it was a sorority sponsored calendar, not even a commercial enterprise.  The NCAA sucks a$$.

THE Key Issues - Limiting liability, TV and Nike/Addidas/Reebok Money for Basketball and Football.  Nothing else really matters to anyone associated with college sports.

As long as the schools can keep that money flowing in and keep the players labor free and dependent they will continue the total sham that is big time college sports.  If you think about it the college basketball tournament generates more than $1B per year in TV revenue.  In the NBA the players receive 49/50% of the generated revenue so by that logic the players in the NCAA tournament would be entitled to no less $500MM next year.

Assume 15 players on 68 teams for a total of 1,020 players and each one would receive $490,000.  Add in the shoe and other money and it is way north of $500k.  A four year commitment with a redshirt season is generating $2.5MM if his team makes the tournament every year he is there.

Instead he will receive a scholarship that costs the school $0.  Maybe some food in the training room and a full time obligation to their sport that probably prevents them from going to school properly making his scholarship worthless in too many cases.

It is shameful what we as a nation allow these young people to be exploited in this way for nothing more than our entertainment.
