For a couple of our teams we're having issues with how to score earned vs. unearned runs. The primary question is this...once the third out of an inning should have been made (inning kept alive by an error), are all runs after this point considered unearned even if no further errors occur? Or if runners once again start reaching base safely (without error) will any additional runs be earned?

Here's a specific scenario and I'd like someone to tell me which runs are earned and which are unearned. Thanks.

B1 ground out (1)
B2 ground out (2)
B3 walk
B4 reaches on error (should have been third out)
B5 3-run home run
B6 walk
B7 2-run home run
B8 ground out (3)

If you can tell me which runs should be earned vs. unearned I would appreciate it.

As long as you're dealing with the same pitcher, all runs after what should've been the third out are unearned. This is fair because it takes into account the fatigue factor that comes into play when a guy is left out there for a lot more pitches than he should've been.

In an oddity, you can have relief pitchers incur earned runs that are not earned on a team basis. That is, suppose in your example you changed pitchers after B5, and then the same things happened with B6, B7 and B8. The runs given up by the reliever would be earned for him, but not for the team. That is, his ERA does not get the benefit of the third out that should have occurred before he got in.
Sorry, I screwed that last one up and put the events in the wrong order. I meant to have the second out after the home run. Let me redo scenario #2 this way....

B1 strike out (1)
B2 reaches on error (should have been out #2)
B3 walk
B4 3-run home run
B5 strike out (2)
B6 strike out (3)

Sorry for the confusion. I'm trying to avoid having what would have been the third out before any of the runs score. Please let me know which of the three runs are earned vs. unearned.

Thanks again.
Jon
Two earned runs, for B3 and B4. B2's run is unearned because, if you recreate the inning without the error, he would have been out and thus not scored. But recreating the inning would have B3 getting a 2-out walk, followed by a 2-out homer by B4, so those runs are earned as they happened before what should've been the third out when B5 struck out.
