Recently a high shool player called and claimed he threw 88-92 mph. When asked if he attended any HS Showcases, he responsed he did and was clocked at 85 mph. Needless to say when worked out he threw 83-84 mph. Do players, parents and coaches get that you can't exaggerate on the field. In 10 minutes people can get 60 yd times, release times, arm strength, see you hit, or clock your pitching speed. If you good people will know it fast, if your not they will know it even faster.

I have found many MLB and MiLB players to be shorter than their advertised height, especially if their advertised height is 6' or less.
I was reading an article today the scout that discovered Jimmy Rollins for the Phillies lied and said he was 5'9" when he was 5'6". He figured the organization wouldn't send a crosschecker to scout a 5'6" player. When the crosschecker saw Rollins play size didn't matter. As a freshman on varsity Rollins was 5'1", 120.
As a college player I know most people on my team lie about thier height and wieght. However, it drives me nuts when people lie about thier ability! Last year I caught a pitcher claiming to a non-baseball player in the cafeteria that he threw 97. I had yet to see him pitch but considering he's a lefty and didn't go in the first 5 rounds, I couldn't imagine he'd throw anywhere close to that. When he got on the field, he threw 79-81. The next day he was sitting with the same guy shaking his head claiming he had no idea how he lost 20 mph! haha!
I dont always think it is intentional for ex: my son was measured 5'11 last year at school for basketball season. Just a few weeks ago for this season he was again and seemed to shrink to barely 5'8. Thinking his life was over, he brought this to the attention of the nurse who documents this info for game programs and for his file. Her response was she was not there to debate, the fact is numbers do not lie.

A week or two had passed and he was do for a yearly checkup and low an behold the the Doc said he is at 6'0. The Doc even tripled checked to set his mind at ease.
height and weight discrepancies will remain an issue for ever. I don't think this will change anytime soon...but in the end it's a fact that regardless of your true height and weight, there is no place to hide on the field, your abilities good or bad will show. Everyone one is looking for an edge of some kind, for some it's gaining an inch or two, for others it's adding a few pounds and for some it's taking a shot of HGH or steroids. What's worse? I'll take an inch and a few pounds over the others mentioned.
I agree with you all. Why even put your son in the position of already having a mark against him when he shows up for a showcase or college private workout, you know? I've been asked on a couple of occasions by a college coach to email him info on my son for an upcoming tryout. Did the thought cross my mind about "fudging"? Yes, but only for a fleeting second. I'm with j2h6 in that an inch or pound won't matter that much, but his abilities WILL talk louder out on the field. No reason to make him All World Stud, etc. when perhaps he's only had limited successes.

We as parents seek Coaches and programs that have full integrity and moral character for our sons. On the same token, shouldn't we be the same way for these coaches? IMHO, I think so.
Happens in amatuer ball too! I asked a friend of mine if she would like to join our league. She said "Sure, I used to play baseball in college with the guys and strike them out all time" I said cool, meet you at the field. She went on and on bragging about all her exploits against guys etc...

So we get to the field, stretch and then start throwing. We were about 60 feet apart. I throw her the ball and she shrieks and gets out of the way telling me I throw too hard! WTH? I told her you told me you know how to play!

Later on when we were splitting up for scrimmages the coach asked can she play third base. She told her yes, so the coach put her on third and asked her to make the throw to first. She barely got it to the pitcher's mound.

I was seriously embarrassed for my friend. Frown

Hey Capt, I think she was trying to get in your lid!
We know a young feller who went to a national showcase for top prospects and we asked him what his time was in the 60, and he said 6.2. I was astounded to say the very least and wondered if he truely had world class speed so I looked it up on the website and they had his time all screwed up, they had him at 6.7! I'm thinkin that whoever posted the times looked at the keyboard, saw the 7 and thought it was the 2, Bingo!
Ok how about a young man who is 5'8 - 5' 9 but can play and who just turned a 6.6 60 at FIU camp. Throws from 82-83 from OF Tracks balls well AND HAS ABOVE AVERAGE BAT SPEED, What does he have to do to get serious consideration? We all see the showcase stud bang off the wall, bang out of here all during BP now game starts K, 4-3, K, POP UP. I see it all the time. I read the jimmy rollins story and if the height wasn't fudged Rollins would not have even been noticed. Explain what shoe size has to do with athletic ability ((hey look at his shoe size what a prospect)I KNOW THIS POST IS ALL OVER THE PLACE BUT I AM A FRUSTRAITED FATHER WHO JUST DOESN'T GET IT.
At the age of HS players height can vary by almost an inch from morning to night. Nothing wrong with rounding up to the nearest inch. It is rounding up to the nearest foot that can lead to a 6'er who is 4 or 5 inches shorter than the 6'2" player next to him.

One of our dads always insists that his son is 6'2" and none of us believe him. He looks 6'4". When my 6'1.5" son (who we would list at 6'2")stands next to him there's about a 1" difference. Pretty unusual to see someone round down like that.

The amazing thing is that when they are at a showcase or camp they end up standing together in groups at times and it isn't difficult to see who the taller players are and aren't.

BTW,
Nice interpretation Bullwinkle.
