Did you Happen to watch 30 For 30 this evening? The topic was Bo Jackson and it was great. Of course, I will admit as an Auburn alum who graduated just a few years prior to his arrival at Auburn I am probably prejudiced. I was very fortunate to see him play live in both baseball and football in college and professionally in baseball. More than anything, he was (and is) a good man, husband, and father. My son was lucky to be recruited at AU, and we attended the AU/GA game starring Cam Newton and a tremendous game against Georgia. The game was "rocking", given all the spectacle of that National Championship year. Yet the highlight was meeting Bo Jackson on the sideline prior to the game. He has done so much for the state of Alabama that even Bammers have to respect him. (His 300 mile bike ride across
Alabama to raise awareness for the victims of the tornado in Tuscaloosa raised over 1 million dollars.)I know I'm rambling so I am cutting and pasting a post from an Alabama fan :

This was one of the best TV productions I have ever seen. I am a Bama fan and have always been a Bama fan. Bo Jackson has to be the greatest athlete in my lifetime and I'm 65 years old. Bo has done more for this state and brought more goodwill to it than anyone in our history that I can think of.

I traveled a lot in my working years and it didn't matter where I was I never met anyone who didn't know and admire Bo Jackson. He was a hero to kids from Seattle to Miami. His humbleness is a trait that I think a lot of Alabamians share. I am a Bama fan but more than that I am a Bo Jackson fan.

If you didn't see it, check to see when it comes on again. My 17 year old son thoroughly enjoyed the piece, but of course he has heard the stories, seen the clips, and read more about him than most.

smalltownmom,

I did see it, and I was reminded of his God-given talents and humility. Bo has to be the best athlete of my generation or possibly my life time. When you hear HOFers George Brett, Howie Long and others talk about him with such regard, it grabs your attention. It is too bad he had the freak accident with his hip, as he would have been the best all time in football....there is no question in my mind.

BTW....I loved seeing that replay of Bo running over Brian Bosworth. That was absolutely classic.

Cabbagedad-- I agree. He is a phenomenol athlete and I must say that year was amazing. But he has disappointed me with his demeanor this year. He is not a Bo. Bo has roots in AU. His daughter is a student there right now. Cam was an exciting bolt of lightening that flashed through. Like Fenway South said, you can only imagine what Bo could have been if not for the hip, but what I like so much about him is that he just did not die. He continues to be vital.
I had tried to explain to my teenage son how amazing Bo was and how he was considered to be the greatest athlete at that time. He had seen highlights of him breaking the bats, running up the wall and the Monday Night Football highlights against Seattle. But the one that made us both shake our heads in disbelief was the one story I had not heard before watching this 30 for 30...

Yankee scout comes to see him hit and the hs coach allows him to hit a few in the cage for the scout. On the first swing, he hit a ball so hard off one of the cage polls that he collapsed the cage.

For another outstanding recent example of a humble superstar, check out the "A Football Life" series on the NFL Network. Last week was Barry Sanders and it was very good. It was great seeing Barry score so many touchdowns and just flip the ball to the ref and is "ho hum, just doing my job".

Shows you how crazy things can be. Barry Sanders HS coach had him playing DB becasue he "Wouldn't stick it in there" as a RB. Had no offers to play college ball but a change of coach before Senior year of HS....the rest is history. Wonder if it's possible that without that coaching change he might have ended up working construction or something like that.
