R3 runs home on a passed ball, C makes nice throw ahead of R3 but P is late covering, P must dive at plate, R3 does not slide and knocks ball loose from P's glove. HPU calls runner out for not sliding. I stated he only has to slide to avoid contact and he said there was contact, foot to glove. HPU is a very good friend, older son's former coach and a newer ump. I walked away unhappy with the call but more unhappy with the player for not sliding.

How would you have ruled?

There is always contact on a tag play. There has to be to have the tag applied.

Unless intentional to attempt to dislodge the ball, then there was nothing to call but safe if he touched HP before being tagged.

If he was called out by judgment of the tag being applied before the touch, then the runner is out. But, if it was after the touch and nothing malicious or intentional to cause the ball to come loose, then the "avoid contact" rule does not apply.

This is one of those rules where new umpires have to be explained and shown it under controlled conditions. Showing the different kinds of ways contact can occur and what may be acceptable and what isn't. Then, they can adjust from there as they see the plays happen.

Remind me to tell you all a story about my local league's "must slide" rule and the argument I had last year with our umpire instructor. It's downright stupid what he said.

please dont tell me he said you can call out a runner at home for not sliding even without a play on him......

BECAUSE.....

I got a call from a league officer a few summers ago when his kid was called out for not sliding at home even when he was not even being played upon......seems a defensive coach convinced an young umpire that the rule was MUST slide.....at all times.....

wow...
