When I attend college baseball games I try to engage parents in conversation to learn about their son's journey. A couple of years ago at a Boston College game I chatted with the mother of a BC player. The family is from Louisiana. The kid looked at SEC baseball as the baseline of college baseball. He didn't think he had the talent. He was playing second base to a high profile prospect shortstop.

In summer ball after senior year a pro scout found the dad on the sidelines. He asked where the kid would be playing college ball. The dad told the scout the kid would be at Boston College because he likes Boston. But there wasn't a plan to play college ball.

The scout told the dad the kid should be playing college ball, knew the BC coach and was going to call to tell him he has a walk on prospect on the way. The rest is history .....

Great story RJM. I have one of my own. I had a player that was being recruited by some small D1 programs but not by any major college programs. I knew this kid had serious talent but he had not performed well in the big showcase tourneys. He had a dream to play for a local major college. I called the coaches and they came to see a game. He did not do anything special that day and they left around the 5th inning.

I called them again and the assistant said "We are just not sold on him. I dont see us offering him." I said "You got a kid 25 minutes from your school that bleeds your school colors. He can flat out play. Take him and you wont be sorry."

I called again the next week and basically begged the coach to come see him one more time. They did and they ended up offering him a recruited walk on spot. All he did his freshman year is start every game. Hit in the top of the order and basically carry them with his bat. He made the All Star game in his summer league. I got a call later in the summer from the coach. "Thanks Coach you were right. And just so you know he is now on scholarship."

The kid hits in the 3 4 spots in the order and is a team leader as a soph. He had to prove he could play. And he did. And I knew he would. And so did he.
