A thread on the recruiting board got me thinking about some of the past teams we have had at my son's school. They have really been loaded with talent the last few years. Check out this lineup from 2 years ago.

catcher, U of AZ
First, DIII in Cal (super student)
Second, U of New Mexico
SS, Yavapai JC not sure of now.
third, pepperdine
RF, ASU
CF, U of Cal, not sure which one
LF, AA pitcher

That was the starters, various bench guys played JC in AZ.

They made it to the quarter finals.
Hustle never has a bad day.

D-Man-

That's impressive, I went back to my son's Junior year of HS...here's what we had, and still couldn't get out of the first round of the playoffs:

C- University of Richmond, D1
1B- NE Oklahoma A&M, strong JC
2B- University of San Diego, D1
SS- Drafted, currently in Whitesox org
3B- JC
LF- will be at UC Riverside next year as a RHP, D1
CF- UC Riverside, D1
RF- UC Irvine as a OF/RHP, D1

RHP- Cal State Northridge, D1
RHP- Upper Iowa, D2 (currently out after Labrum surgery)

My son's HS team had a tough draw in the CIF playoffs his junior and senior season. The CIF playoff committee had them play the same highly ranked school both seasons, and they lost both games...last year's game went 14 innings, 1-0. There's a ton of great players in Southern California, and the competition for the local universities is crazy, from D3/NAIA all the way up to the best D1 schools. On a side note, my son's college roommate/teammate was an outfielder on that other HS team...it's a small baseball world!
You guys had some impressive lineups. I thought my sons team was good last year, but not that great.

Here we go, last spring:

LF Maryville, (MO) D-2
CF Missouri Western D-2
RF Freshman, so who knows
3B Sophomore, leaning Truman ST (MO) D-2
SS Arkansas
2B Sophomore verballed to Iowa
1B Maryville
C/P Truman State

LHP Lindenwood (MO) D-2 walk on
RHP Junior St Charles CC (MO)
LHP Sophomore--for sure first round draft pick in 2013

We went to the quarterfinals in the biggest class so we did pretty good.
This isn't a high school team, but I thought you all would get a kick out of it anyway. This was my 2006 Connie Mack League team and where some of the players ended up. They were a fun bunch to coach, very easy to coach.

Pitchers
Alex Rivers, Santa Clara, Kansas City Royals
Tyler Graham,Nevada, Kansas City Royals
David Dinelli, Sierra College, Houston Astros
Daniel Wolford, Cal, Cincinnati Reds
Tyler Waldron, Oregon State, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Hunter Carnevale,Pacific, New York Mets
Eric Otterson, Fresno State
Paul Jinkens, Sacramento State

Catchers
Dwight Childs, Arizona, Cleveland Indians
Brent Hottman, Sacramento State (senior)
Chris Cottingham, Nevada

First Base
Lars Anderson, Boston Red Sox
Ian Gray, Missouri Valley

Shorstop
Rikki Foster, UC Davis

Third Base
Cory Valine, San Jose State

Outfield
Jamie Niley, Pacific, drafted by Rockies out of high school
Tim Wheeler, Sacramento State, Colorado Rockies
Tyler DeWitt, Sierra College, drafted by Reds out of high school

A number of additional players played jr. college ball from this team, and a few gave up baseball to focus on academics.

Of that group, Lars signed right out of high school and has been in AAA and with the Big League club for the last few years. Tim Wheeler was a first round pick after his junior year of college, and had a big year in AA this past summer, so we're hoping he may be in AAA this summer. This week may be an interesting one for Lars with the meetings in Dallas. That pitching staff threw gas for an 18u team, with all those pitchers mentioned being guys who sat between 88-92, depending on the player.

They were a great bunch, winning 39 of their last 44 games.

Son's team last year.
San Jose State
Stanford
Stanford
Signed with Tampa Bay
UC Davis
Long Beach State
UC Santa Barbara

Juniors in the starting lineup:
NLI to Washington
no NLI yet, but played in the PG All-American Classic (was Aflac game.)

Lost in first round of sectional play-offs. Smile

3FG,

That's what I'm talking about, your son's team was loaded, but they lost in the first round as well. Maybe CIF should look at going best of three in the playoffs? The San Diego Section utilizes this format, and the best teams appear to win their division each year.

Honestly, I'm just hoping our kids will get a chance to pitch in the Big West this season...perhaps against each other? My son is having a good time at his UC, I hope your's is doing the same!?
I'll take a slightly different angle on this. Below is the starting lineup for my son's HS team in his junior season (2010) in which they won their league, Section, named CA team of the year by ESPN/CalHi Sports and were ranked #1 in nation at the end of the year by Perfect Game and Rivals.com.

Kind of shows a solid nucleus, very good but not overwhelming stardom, good pitching...and a GREAT coach Wink :

C, Senior, JUCO (hurt, never played)
1B, Junior, San Jose State
2B, Senior, never played after HS
SS, Senior, USC (starting SS as a freshman)
3B, Junior, never played after HS
RF, Sophomore, still in HS, will play at USD next season
CF, Junior, Sacramento State
LF, Senior, walkon made team at Santa Clara Univ. (minimal play time)

SP, Senior, Univ. of San Francisco (minor playing time as frosh)
SP, Junior, Univ. of Washington
SP, Senior, San Jose State (significant playing time as frosh)
This is Guns 5A high school team his freshman year (2008), the only year we made it to the playoffs. We lost in the Bi-District Round to the eventual 5A State Runner-up.

C, Soph, D3 (left 1st fall semester)
1B, Fresh, (GUN-Lubbock Christian NAIA)
2B, SR, never played after HS
SS, JR, never played after HS
3B/RHP, JR, D1 walk-on transfer to NAIA
RF, JR, never played after HS (Marines)
CF/RHP, JR, D3 (left 1st fall semester)
LF, SR, never played after HS

SP, Soph never played after HS
SP, SR never played after HS

That's six never played after HS starters. And, five of the six never finished/attended college. It was a really salty, gritty, s c r a p p y little group coached by a 2nd year HC.

Going back a few years, my son's high school (he was in middle school at the time) had a one-two pitching rotation of Phil Hughes, first round pick out of HS who has a World Series ring, and Cole St. Clair, who was an absolute beast at Rice his Frosh and Soph years, pitching I believe in two CWS. He's in the minors still, after an injury his Junior year.

In the bullpen, that team had a Soph who would go on to earn CIF POY award in So Cal, and became USC's Friday starter as a Frosh, and was a supp. first rounder after Junior year at SC.

They also had a Soph pitcher who would end up pitching significant, crucial innings in Omaha during Fresno State's incredible run to a Natl. Championship. In addition, they had a Soph P/OF who injured his pitching arm Sr year, but started in the OF/1B almost all four of his year's at UCLA, even getting back on the mound briefly, before hurting his arm again.

That 2004 HS team, with all that pitching talent, lost in either the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs.

As a post script, those 3 Sophs did win CIF in 2006 as seniors, and won the mythical "Cal. State Championship" from Cal Hi Sports or some other voting entity.

The year my son's team won the 6A Florida State Championship, roster:

C - 17 his Senior Year, at a D2 as a Junior now.
1B - SR JUCO then to D1
1B/RP - JR, now at FSU as a pitcher
2B - JR, at D2 with 17
3B - JR, JUCO
SS - JR, D1, left after first fall to now at NAIA
LF/SP - JR, signed D1, went JUCO
CF - JR, Torn ACL his senior season yet to recover
RF - FR, still at high school as a Senior
Designated Runner for 17 (17 never ran any bases in high school play) - went to play football at Toledo as a wide receiver.
SP - SO eventually drafted 2011 1st round by Marlins

Needless to say, pitching and defense wins Florida high school championships with only 2 games per week all the way through. That coach had a great crop of pitchers go through high school with 17 that allowed for some very dominant teams. His high school returned to State Semi's the year after he left, and last year again won the state championship on the back of a 96 mph fast balling future Marlin.

Hmmmm let me see

Catcher - walked on at Western Kentucky University
First - football scholarship
Second - Motlow State JC in TN
Short - Blew out ACL in football and barely made it back for spring now coaching HS
Third - Church League Softball
Left - Ladies man in Myrtle Beach judging from his facebook
Center - Beer League Softball
Right - at one point he had the school record for saves at Kentucky Wesleyan College

All my pitchers were position players.

Not too shabby I guess

Well there was this one time when a church league team was scheduled to play a beer league team on a saturday. Day of the game one team showed up - come to find out that they were the same team. Deacons and all.

Tom - Your too kind, without guys like your son, an awesome pitcher who raked too, we wouldn't have had a chance. We had a lot of fun those 4 years.

Hope Thomas is healthy and happy!
In younger son's freshman year (2009)they won the state championship for AAA schools.
C- Sophomore Football Newberry College
1B- Freshman signed w/Clemson University
2B- Senior Southern Wesleyan (NAIA)
3B- Senior signed w/USC Upstate
SS- Senior signed w/Wofford College
LF- Senior signed w/North Greenville (D-II)
CF- Junior signed w/USC-Upstate

The SS was one of the main pitchers, when he pitched the sophomore DH played 3rd and the 3B went to short. That DH was also a main pitcher and he signed w/South Carolina, is now at Spartanburg Methodist JC.

Sons HS team won State easily his junior year and was knocked out in the semi's his Senior year (lost three key players before playoffs; kicked off the team);

Pitcher - D1 Georgia; redshirt, never played.
Pitcher # 2 - D1 Davidson football; started freshman @ Quarterback!
Catcher - held out for D1 offer, student at Alabama.
1b - Son; D2 (only early signee).
2b - NAIA; not playing.
SS - student @ N. Carolina
3b - NAIA, not playing.
LF - D1 Harvard football; started freshman @ running back.
CF - D1 Auburn, off the team before Season began.
RF - student

I read of your teams and can say wow. Sons HS team has 6 or 7 State baseball championships over the last 20 years, but only 3 MLB draftees. They can, however, count a NASA Astronaut and an Olympic Gold medalist among their own (not on sons team!).

Son's HS team won the State Championship as Soph's, lost by a single run as Jr's and Sr's in State Championship final

Three MLB draft picks upon HS grad (36th, 45th and 46th round)

C-frosh then, Top D1 level recruit nationally, considering ACC, SEC, Big 12
1B-signed with D1 University of Dayton
2B-signed with D1 Butler University
SS-signed with D1 Kansas State, drafted by Dodgers
3B-signed with D1 Ohio State, drafted by Giants
LF-signed with D3 Wheeling Jesuit
CF-soph then, recently signed with D1 Cincinatti
RF-student, no longer plays, Akron
P-signed with D1 Virginia, transferred to D1 Kent State, drafted by Athletic's

Three multiple organization All American's, ranked #1 for over three weeks in MaxPreps, Rivals.com, Collegiate Baseball and ESPN Rise plus as high as 2nd in USAToday Sr. year (30-2 Sr., 30-3 Jr., 29-4 Soph), State Player of the Year, four All State Players.

And . . . a whole lot of fun to watch!

Good stuff. Here’s a slightly different slant on this thread…
My son’s HS hasn’t fielded an outstanding team in decades, but he went there anyway in hopes of changing that. Things didn’t quite work out that way, but here are some of the guys that my son played with or against in the HS years.

Brett Anderson*- LHP Oakland A’s
Matt Moore- LHP Tampa Bay Rays
Rick Porcello*- RHP Detroit Tigers
Chris Parmelee*- OF Minnesota Twins
Jordan Pacheco- C Colorado Rockies
Kyle Blanks- OF San Diego Padres
Anthony Rizzo*- 1B San Diego Padres
James Parr- RHP Atlanta Braves

Hello Cannon,

I think I know this team! Isn't this the famous "3 starting pitchers in the 90's" team from NE Ohio? My son is currently playing with another of your team members (relief pitcher), so count another in your college success story.

I don't know about famous (LOL) but fairly well-known in Ohio (yep, Mark B, it was WJ) and I think I know who you are referencing and who I forgot to mention and should have . . . had we not had three draft picks, he would have been a Number One possibility. On most HS teams, he would have been an inning eater and I real stud which he was with us when he number was called. I wish your son and him well at that next level. They have a very accomplished program there . . .
Son's high school was not exactly a powerhouse program, but he did play with and against some very accomplished athletes in travel ball. His junior year he pitched against the Midwest Redbirds, a scout team for the St. Louis Cardinals. One of their star players was Stetson Allie, later a #1 draft pick of the Pirates for his 100-mph fastball. That particular day, Stetson was playing short and batting cleanup. Whenever anyone asks my son how he did against Stetson, his reply is "I kept him in the yard". You should have seen the two 400-ft drives that slammed off the center field wall! Smile
My son was on that Midwest Redbirds team with Stetson and five of those WJ players were on that team, also. Stetson was referred to by PG as having maybe the greatest HS arm ever but many folks don't realize that while he was a $2.2M draft pick as a pitcher, he was a prolific SS from his FR season in HS through his graduation and, had he strictly focused on that element of the game, would have been heard from as well. UNC actually signed him as a two-way player and, had he gone to College, he may have gotten some time at 3B. What HS did your son attend? I never missed a Midwest Redbirds game so I am sure I saw the game you are referencing . . . thanks.

Cannon,

My son goes to the high school that the King bros. attended that play with your son. Jason is now home after finishing up with the Tigers rookie team and my son is working on hitting with him.

Brian Hopkins has winter camps at our school as well.

Outstanding baseball program there at DJ and outstanding players in those two . . . Jared is my son's best friend out in Manhattan, KS and Jason is the reason he ultimately decided to attend there. I saw Jason this fall and he was rehabbing his knee and hoping to be ready for opening day next season. As hard as those kids work, that is a no doubt fact . . . I wouldn't bet against it. I'm sure your son must be a talented player if he is in that program. Good luck this season and maybe you'll run into WJ in the play-offs as they were bumped up a class to D1 this season (by six boys I heard!). Thanks.

Hello Cannon,

My son attended Massillon Perry. He played travel ball for the Stark County Terriers. The game I referred to was at Kent State.

You and your son are very fortunate to be involved with such a great high school program. The WJ player who is currently my son's teammate is a class act on and off the field. He will certainly be a contributor this year.
