As a pitcher's mom I watched it happen this year. Nothing can really be said- it's scary.

According to internet broadcasters, Paul is now in "good" condition with a possible broken nose and also a posssible broken right orbital bone.

Hopefully this is as bad as it gets and Paul is back with his team soon(they need his skills on the mound)!

Prayers said from here also. We praise God for those orbital bones. Our daughter was a softball manager in highschool and was hit by a wild (pre game warm up) pitch in the face as she was sitting on the bench getting the score book ready for the game. You just never know. It broke her glasses and she had a small cut-nothing more.

Update:

Paul was released from hospital this morning and returned to his apartment. One tough young man!

My wife is in Lynchburg this weekend and will have much more info on Paul later this evening after the conclusion of today's game.

Paul is resting well, with multiple fractures to his nose. Doctors are waiting for the swelling to go down to further evaluate the orbital bones and determine if and when surgery will be performed. Prognosis to this point is that it(the injury) is better than many expected.

My prayers are with this young man and his family, I know exactly how they feel. Hopefully he will be as lucky as my sonwas and no surgery will be required.

Truly a pitcher's parents worst nightmare. Glad he's recovering nicely. Prayers on their way.

There are plenty of people in Lynchburg praying for him as well. I was in attendance at the game. I had never heard the stadium as quiet as it was Saturday night when he was hit. I thought they were required to have paramedics on hand at the games? But obviously they are not.

I hope Paul has a speedy recovery and can be back out there as soon as possible. He was an essential part of the rotation.

Our son is a pitcher. This type of thing is always in the back of my mind.

What is really strange is that we here in Pirate Country haven't heard a peep about this. Strange because Paul Maholm was their #1 draft pick last year. Wow...nightmare is right---do hope Paul is fine and returns to form real soon.

I had a player a few years back who got hit in the face with a line drive in a high school game. He struggled all summer. Came back as a new man the following summer season. Told me that his problems were mostly mental, not physical. It got to the point where his parents had him speak to a sports psychologist. It was during these sessions that he discovered his fear, confronted it, and worked to overcome it. Pitching for UVa these days. Best of luck to Paul!!!
