OK, So my 10 soon to be 11 year old got a good wooden bat for Christmas. It was a youth model made out of maple made by easton. Well, he ended up breaking it in the cages. I like the wood bat for him because it is a drop 8 versus these ultra light aluminum bats. He is a bigger kid and has no issue with the weight of it (only 23 oz). I tried to find out if there are any 31" 22 or 23 aluminum bats on the market but didn't find any. I found some more youth bats, but they are $35, which I know is not a lot of money for a bat, but if he keeps on breaking them I could end up spending a fortune. Anyone have any suggestions. Yes, he was hitting cage balls, but I have seen people use wood bats all the time in the cages...

It shouldn't break on the first use. If it did contact the manufacturer for a replacement. May sound odd but is he using it correctly? Is hitting with the label up or down?
Wood bat droop 8? Most are drop 4 or less.
You need a maple bat. Try Sam bat. Kid has used one for years without issue.
I'd go with a bamboo bat for the cage. Very very hard to break. The ones from bamboobat are great. $50 at justbats.com.
The -8 wood bats are very thin at the handle and break easily when caught inside if your not disciplined. You can get the XL3 in -8 and -5 I believe.
Thanks! I will look into the xl3
Hit me up on PM, I have several 28-30" brand new Mad Dog bamboo bats that are drop -8.
Sold all the bigger -3 models
$25 each plus the ride.
no 31" ? He needs one of those..... If you have one, I am in.
The 31's are -3....
I would say use metal until you can handle a minus 3 or at least minus 5.
I don't have them up on our website yet MacDougallBats.com , but we are just about to launch our new youth wood bat line. They are made the same way as our adult Powerwood bats. They will carry a ONE YEAR breakage warranty and they are 100% real wood. Just had a bunch of kids try out the prototypes at a local indoor hitting league the other night and they loved them. Although they cost the same to make as our other bats, we will be pricing them $20 less at $169. They will be approximately a -6 swingweight.
In case you haven't heard, beginning in 2018, all youth bats will have to comply with a new rule that is essentially the same as the BBCOR rule. In other words, they will have to perform the same as a wood bat. The lead organization on this is USA Baseball but Little League and others are participating.
