Arizona Senior All-Academic Tryouts
Hey Everyone.... Just wanted to see if anyone has gone through the tryouts for the Senior All Academic Game. Son is a LHP Senior in So. Calif. Foothill League and was invited to the tryout this coming Thursday, so just wanted to know what to...

Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
My son recently committed to a high academic D3 school. He's very excited about both the academics and the baseball program, however this is one of those schools that does not have "slots" for athletes. He has to get past admissions, and the school is extremely selective. I don't believe the coaches would have recruited him if he didn't have a chance, but it's far from a sure thing. His pre-read was not a slam dunk, but also not a "no". He'll be applying early decision, and that leads to my...

Catchers Mitt
Hello everyone, I am looking to buy a new mitt. I don't have any experience with the two mitts I am interested in (Wilson a2000's and All Star pro). Which is better in durability and time to break in. Also I am aware that the all star is $100 more so I just want to know which is the best bang for my buck.

AZ Fall Classic Junior/Senior All Academic Game
First off, is there a feature where one can search the forums? I can't seem to find that function anywhere and I have to think someone has asked this question already...but here it goes: Besides the obvious academic standards a player has to meet in order to be eligible to play in one of the AZ Fall Classic All-Academic tryout and game (Must have at least a 3.7 GPA OR an ACT score of 27 or higher OR SAT score of 1700 is the minimum for tests taken prior to Jan 2016. 1200 (new scoring system)...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
Same thought... actually, I never fully understood the idea of committing to a D3 school where you are not academically accepted yet. The wise advice always given here is to keep the foot on the pedal until there is a reasonable level of certainty (even then, keep doors and communication lines open). Your description of his status is far from that... "... this is one of those schools that does not have "slots" for athletes. He has to get past admissions, and the school is extremely...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
Cabbage Dad just my 2cents but here goes just 1 reason to "commit" -- if a player has multiple offers of admission support for a D3 (even those very few elite hA without slots), they can only ED to one school (true for any ED school whether D1 or D3). You can apply internationally, to military academies I believe and also to state universities. So once the player opts to apply ED to their top choice, they let the other schools know they have made a choice and those other offers tend to go...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
I'm mostly inline with 2Boys, but I can see a tiny bit of wiggle room. First of all you have to apply for the All Academic game tryout, and to submit that with incorrect info would not be an honest choice or fair to other applicants. To Adbono's point, a commitment to a D3 college _is_ a commitment, once the ED app is in. You're signing a contract that says you will attend that school if admitted (absent some limited mitigation circumstances.) But that said, if ED app is not in, and taking...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
Thanks guys, very informative. I learned some things. Still, it seems that this player is not yet to the point where it wouldn't make sense to keep opening doors as backup. And, I'm not sure why the coach at school A would be upset if the acceptance is far from a sure thing.

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
We use the word "committed" for D3 recruiting but I don't think the players are committed until the school officially accepts them when their ED decisions go out in Dec. Submitting an application ED does not mean the student/player has to withdraw all other applications - that does not have to happen until they are accepted by their ED school (I googled just to be sure). Non-baseball playing students are allowed to submit applications to additional schools as back-up in case they are not...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
What would be the point of going and communicating with new schools? To let them know you'd love for them to be a backup option? If he doesn't get in he can always apply to other schools, explain the situation and show up the first day of tryouts. If you're good enough they'll keep you, they don't have scholarship guys to account for. Recruiting means the least at the D3 level, your game determines your role, not so much the commitment you made. That being said, unless travel and all that is...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
I am again probably showing my relative ignorance with D3 as I certainly have more direct experience with the other levels. Still, I have had a fair number of players from our program end up going D3. Most of those players still considered baseball to be a very big part of the equation. Again, the OP says acceptance is far from a sure thing. With recruiting at other levels, coaches generally would be more than happy to take a drop down should things not work out at the player's first choice.

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
So the real question is, did your son have more options before he committed to this one school for ED? And if so, what were those options? With extremely selective schools, ED is almost a necessity for admission (and even then doesn't always work); so, backups need either to be schools with ED2 where coaches can give support, or schools where he could be admitted RD without official coach support. Only you know if such schools are out there. At that point it will depend on how good his...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
Keep your foot on the gas. Did your son go the classic and academic game as a junior? Then you know that that tryout is a meat market, and the senior event may be even more crowded. If you're worried about your son being accepted ED, then go. A coach at a school with no slots will understand your concern. I'd also let other coaches know your kid is gonna be there. Maybe he lights it up and some other school he actually likes takes a shine to him and piques his interest. People have the right...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
You've submitted a pre-read in good faith. Your son will be submitting an ED application in good faith, yet there are no guarantees by admissions or the coach your son will be admitted. The risk is all on your son, and for this reason I would attend the showcase for the purposes of possible RD application to another school. You are dealing with a process where the outcomes are not always positive. My son kept in communication with some schools after he committed and applied ED to a D1 HA...

I think it is better to keep all options open , as you never know what can transpire. Especially if you are close to the event. It is a cool event. We had "almost" commited last year at this time but still went. My son wanted to keep his options open. He made the academic game(pitcher) last year after being extremely dissapointed as a junior and not making it. If you make the all academic game there are a lot of HA D3 schools as well as D2 and many D1. We had a lot of contacts at the event...

Re: Arizona Senior All-Academic Tryouts
This was 4 years ago, but I don't think it has changed much. Pitchers tryout in the bull pens with coaches watching. There are around 8 mounds in a row that the coaches are watching. There will be a primary coach with a gun at each mound grading the pitchers. You basically have to be in the top 50% to be selected for the game based on the numbers. They are not pre-selected as kids are coming from all over the country and so are the coaches so I am not sure how they could do this. You should...

Re: Arizona Senior All-Academic Tryouts
Have them both relax and have fun. Just being on the tryout list will help them. True story, my son was on one of the interior mounds trying out, and I asked him how it went and he said "well I don't know how hard I was throwing, but it got the interest of the two coaches on either side of me as I saw them sneaking a reading from me a couple of pitches. His scout coach got two telephone calls during the tryout inquiring about him. So they will be seen before the evening game. Good luck to...

Re: AZ Fall Classic Junior/Senior All Academic Game
I thought I would revive a thread like this instead of creating a new one or hijacking others. IMHO this is one of the better showcase game for those who qualify. As stated above there is a minimum GPA, SAT/ACT to even be considered. My son participated in the Jr, made the team and did well in the game. Basically breaks down as 1/2 day tryout by position (have maybe 15-20 balls, throws, bats) and the results are announced later that day. Evening game follows. What makes this different is it...

I would have to agree, this is one of the better showcases to participate in. My son went from 0 coach contacts to 12 to 15 within a week after the junior showcase game. This was our first showcase, as he didn't really have any skills that grabbed your attention his freshman and sophomore year. If your son has the grades and something to show, I would highly recommend it. One caveat... pitching commands the most attention.

Re: AZ Fall Classic Junior/Senior All Academic Game
Great idea to revive this post now while the application period is open for both sessions. I am not sure there is any preference given to the early applicants over the later ones, but better to get it in early to be on the list. And remember there is no guarantee of even getting invited to tryout, but they refund the money if a kid is not selected. Reading back over my posts above, I see they ended in 12/2016 before my 2017 knew his fate. He was so fortunate to get the chance to pitch in the...

AZ Fall Classic Academic All Star game is one of the most beneficial recruiting events a high academic recruit can attend . Yet, one of the most underrated or unknown events on the circuit. IMO its a 'Must Do' event for kids looking to play at smart schools. Like Area Codes, Even the try-outs are Stacked. w/ RC's and HC's. Havard, Berkeley, Duke......They're ALL there.

Agree, but I do think the opportunity was best for Pitchers and Catchers. As a position player you really needed to have an exceptional day to get noticed.

Any of your sons tried out in the morning but didn't make the team for the afternoon game? I'm trying to decide if this is going to be worth it. My son was invited to try out and we are planning to go out there but I am getting worried now as people question me what if my son doesn't make the team.. didn't think of this until we signed up and got the email back that he is invited. Would it be still worth it to just try out in front of those coaches?

The ship is sailing away for the most sought after HA D3’s. The kids who were seeking Ivy are finding out it’s not likely to happen. Plan B has gone Into effect. I would think there may be a few of them still searching for a P, or to replace a last minute fallout at the time of the AZ Classic. Otherwise the majority of other D3’s are still shopping. I dealt w this last year w my 2018. I thought the AZ Classic was one of the best run showcase/camps through the entire recruiting process for my...

Re: AZ Fall Classic Junior/Senior All Academic Game
AZ Academic Classic was definitely one of the best. It might be a little late but if your son does not have a team for the weekend ask around. Just be cautious though that this can be a financial decision for the teams (more players mean more team funding, NOT necessarily more playing time). If your son does extremely well and if a school wants him there will be a way to find some money. Since you are already there might want to catch the AZ Fall League MLB Top Prospects games if you can't...

I am a little confused. what do you mean by if he as a team for the weekend? I was not aware you need to go as a team. players report at Padres field and try out in the morning ..3pm it will be posted if the player gets picked... if they get picked they get to play a game at 5pm..this year it is held on Oct 18 for the junior all academic try out and game..... I'm assuming there is just two teams formed so they can play a game. Did I miss something?

Re: AZ Fall Classic Junior/Senior All Academic Game
You asked if it was going to be worth it. If it's the only thing you're doing, and it sounds like it is, you're asking a great question. There will be scouts at the tryouts, so a kid will be seen whether they make the game or not, but most kids do NOT make the evening game. It's incredibly competitive and if a kid does make it, practically every scout at the Classic will be there watching. The tryout has a lot of stuff going on at once--some positions hitting, some running, some doing...

My 2019 is a catcher and I was told that they typically have around 35 try out at that position and 15-20% make it to the game. I'm not sure about other position numbers.

Re: AZ Fall Classic Junior/Senior All Academic Game
For pitchers I think 85+ will get you in the junior game. Smoke is right about the 60. It was run in the outfield warning track, which was very soft. Like running in sand. Times were .2 to .3 slower than they would be on turf.

The schedule for this year's AZ Junior Fall Classic is now posted. FYI, it does look like this year there are other games going on during the Academic Game (and maybe for part of the Academic Tryouts--earliest game starts at 12:30) which from prior posts on here it seems is different than other years.

Both are good mitts. Son has them both. Both break in good. Both hold up to heavy use. He got about 2 years of heavy use out of the a2000 and needed restringing. Now it's his back up. You can't go wrong with either.

Re: Under Armour Vs. All-Star
I will start off by saying I have no experience with either set. But here's what my advice is. If you have a local store that sells both go there and try them on. If not go to each manufacturers website and look at the specs and you might be able to determine that way. Are you just looking for something different or are you not happy with the System 7 gear? Might also want to look at the Wilson ProMotion gear. It is on sale right now on baseballsavings.com. I just picked up a set of the leg...
