Whoops! Confused you with someone else. Go to the D3.com website someone suggested. Click on teams. Click on region. Click on teams in your region. Find their league standing. Chances are if the top teams aren't after you at this point they're not interested. They recruit. Look at the .500 teams. What I posted about calling coaches still applies. You don't have time to waste. You should make your calling list over the next couple of days and be on the phone Wednesday morning.

JuCo (NJCAA) is not much different from the NCAA D1, D2, D3, etc when it comes to recruiting. Most quality JuCo teams recruit just like the "big boys" and walking on at good JuCo programs can be just as hard as walking on at a D1 or D2 university. Don't assume anything. My son was recruited by a JuCo that has had a consistent showing in the regional playoffs. At his freshman fall practices there were 55 players including two walk-ons. Out of the 55 only 35 made the spring squad and neither...

The recruiting is pretty much the same for JUCO as it is D1,2,3 with the exception that JUCOs typically recruit later in the process. They don't want to spend time recruiting a kid that will end up going to a D1/2/3 school so they will wait until that recruiting timeline has passed. I can tell you that my son was watched by JUCOs last fall and recruited/signed this January. The school he will be attending is still looking for a player or two, and they are still actively recruiting through...

Please consider watching the current California Community College Regional playoffs. Your son will have a good perspective on his future college baseball goals. In California there is little recruiting by the Coaches. Encouragement yes. Each September, there will be over 80 prospects at the 1st day of practice. Do you live near Riverside? Bob Williams

Your son could be setting himself up for disappointment, however, IMO he definitely has a better chance as a walk-on at JuCo than at D1/2/3. For one thing, JuCos typically play more games in the fall. That will allow the coach to make a better assessment of his talent than the more restricted schedules of D1/2/3. Also, JuCo rosters are much more fluid than four year schools. Obviously they have to replace about half of the team every year, plus a few guys do get drafted or move on the D1...

Wow, that is quite different than our experience with California JC. Most rosters are filled with players who not only started for their HS but were all-league caliber. I've had several players with all-league recognition get cut by the local JC here (granted, a strong one that is a bit rare in that they typically get several players from out of the area as well). Both JC's one son played for had 80+ show up in fall. Blood bath every year. I guess I could see what you describe happen with a...

2nd what Cabbage says and particularly what Bob Williams says. Playoffs are currently going on within a short drive from wherever you live in SoCal. Your son should be able to get an idea very quickly of whether or not he can play at that level. As for what the RC says I'm sure he's sincere, but that doesn't mean the the program doesn't cut half or more of the kids who show up in the fall. That's what I hear about the local JC up here in NorCal.

All this is agreeable. In my son's experience, yes they do recruit later in the process, generally during the senior season. During his frosh fall ball, about 70+ showed up but it's a good thing that your son will be playing for the RC's summer team. Gives the RC about 2 months to evaluate him and gives him a head start over some of the other walk ons who's not playing for him. Good luck to him.

Re: College Coaches Show Case Camp

adbono ·
The answer is "it depends." If any of the schools that will have coaches at this camp are schools of interest to you/your son its well worth the cost - as this is not an expensive event. Even one session for $179 is not bad just for the experience. If your son does well he may get on the right radar early on. On the flip side, if you have no interest in any of these schools (and you don't need the showcase experience) then its a waste of time and money.

We've gotten the same emails and the same letter in the mail. These camps are worked by the volunteer coaches. It is a way for them to make some extra money. There won't be any RC's or HC's there from what I can tell. We have been getting email after email from Ohio and Iowa about the camp in Memphis. Friends of ours have too. It is pretty clearly a money grab.

Welcome to the site. In the coming years, your son will likely get flooded with camp, showcase, tourney and try-out invites, especially camps. This site is a great resource for sorting out what makes sense to consider for each player's situation. First, he needs to start putting together a recruiting plan (if he is starting to feel ready to attend some of these events). It won't make much sense to pay for and attend an event if he has no interest in the schools present, except for the...

My son attended this particular showcase in our area. The only reason he went was because he was already speaking to a RC that was going to be there and they hadn't seem him yet aside from video. I do think it was a money grab though. They were supposed to get one on one feedback from the coaches running the showcase, however, in my son's case, he was a pitcher and they had coaches trade off when they were watching the bullpen. So only one coach actually watched my son. I ended up sending an...

Ohio is relentless on the e-mails for these camps they collaborate on around the country. Thousands sent every year. Also, look at their roster and where they sign their players from. Teams like Ohio typically are not fully funded at 11.7 scholarships, so they tend to recruit home-grown talent or talent from border states. Couple of kids from California and one from Texas (outliers) but everyone else is from the rust belt.

Happens all the time. Where do you think the showcases get their mailer lists? Largely from school camps and other showcases. A player is tagged to have attended "event A". Mass invites are sent. "We saw you at "event A" and liked what we saw. We would like to invite you to "event B" for another look and an opportunity to ..." blah, blah, blah. That's also why so many get this note even when they ended up not attending "event A". But how did they see me when I wasn't there? ... is a question...

Questions to ask the coach during your unofficial visit When you go on your unofficial visit, one of your top priorities should be to ask the coach any questions you have about the school and the program. Before you go, write down your questions and keep adding to the list throughout your visit. When it’s time to talk to the coach, you’ll have your list ready to go, rather than trying to come up with questions on the spot. Here some examples of questions you might want to ask: What are the...

If I take THIS major do you think I can graduate on time or am I required to take summer or winter school? Do you have a cap on the credits per semester I am allowed to take? 3. Can I...

Perhaps if you provide a little additional information than some folks can help in pointing you in the right direction. One of you posts has your son at 6-1 135. Perhaps what other pitches does he have? More importantly, what schools are agreeable, whether geographically, academically, etc.? The more information, the better you can then start putting together a target list. No idea about OK, but JUCO route still has lots of opportunity for 2017 grads.

I guess my decision point would be "not the strongest" versus "weak". If truly weak, then JUCO might be best to get some classes needed before moving to a 4 yr and maybe see if college is truly workable. If academics are simply not a priority at this time, then now might be the time to make the commitment to put in the effort and tackle the 4yr school academics. Given the level of support that is provided at many schools, I would hope this is doable and baseball could provide the carrot...

Academics in college, no matter where you go, can be very tough to adjust to. Time management is at a premium, and there are plenty of distractions. I have an older son who is now 25. He struggled a little in high school in terms of grades. He went to a relatively smaller school for undergrad and it took him a year or so to get his academic footing. The JUCO situation in Southern California is really tough on both fronts. The baseball teams are loaded with lots of D1 talent players who did not make the grades to play D1 and are now trying to get there. A kid who is not a top baseball talent is not likely to play much. And then many of the core classes are filled with lots of motivated students who either could not get admitted into the increasingly competitive UC and State schools (despite many having high GPAs and test scores) or...

Those statements seem to contradict. I agree with the latter. JUCO opportunities vary greatly by location. The more competitive the league = more D1/D2 scouts/coaches watching. There maybe alot of D1 talent in SoCal JC leagues, however, If a kid is a legit D1 talent he will play, a marginal D2 talent might not play on a strong JC team. The SoCal JC leagues are competitive but most of the players move onto D2, Some JC coaches do a good job at getting the kids to take the right classes, some others not so much.
