Wesley, As a 16 year old, you have a good base to work with. I would recommend three things immediately: 1. Lose the Knee Savers. This should allow you to get lower in your stance. Also along that line...get more flexible in your hip flexors. Take a yoga class. You have a pretty good sized frame and you will need to present a low target at times. Flexibility is very important. 2. Find a long toss or arm strengthening/stabilizing program. We use Jamie Evans' Velo-City (...

I'm no expert at all in catching but why are you turning the glove down just before you receive? After you catch the ball your glove is nice and quiet but that little flip could cost you some strikes.

Re: Catching Video, Feedback Appreciated

Wesleythecacther ·
I do that to relax my hand and make sure that I stay underneath the ball and that I catch the bottom of the ball and it allows me to stick the pitch instead of the ball bringing my glove out of the strike zone once it hits the mitt.

Re: Catching Video, Feedback Appreciated

noumpere ·
I disagree that the "flip" is going to cost any strike (in and of itself). As an umpire, I am focused on the ball, not the glove -- and by the time the ball gets to the glove the glove is back where it should be. I'll leave any comments on the value of the flip or how it might affect other aspects of the catching to the coaches here.

DVD is too long, maybe 2-3 minutes Max and need to incorporate some hitting.

I will try to get video of me hitting sometime in the future. I knew someone was going to say that. A question related to hitting off the tee that I have is, how far off the tee should I be able to hit the ball? I am going into my senior year, I am 6 ft and 200 lbs.

Wesley, First, I think it is great that you are doing this. From experience I know that it is difficult to narrow down multiple shots into a concise video. It is important, though that you shorten it, if the intent is to get a college coach to view it. I recommend 2 minutes but no more than 3. My other points: The glove flip is common and typically used as a relaxation technique. Dont worry about that. I would definitely include hitting, maybe the first part if it is the strength of your...

Thanks for the advice. I will include hitting in future videos. I will shorten it some more by taking out the clips you suggested. I will get more video of my throws to second. I got this video taken a couple weeks ago and have gotten better. Got my pop time down below 2.0 and my best at a 1.8.

Man you look much better in this video than the one we talked over a few weeks ago. Great job in getting better with hard work. Keep it up. Few things 1. The glove flip isn't a big deal but IMO and others may disagree which is fine but personally I think you may have too much movement. You get into higher velocities it could cause you to be late in receiving but maybe not. I'm a big believer in the down tilt then pop to the spot. 2. Get rid of the throws from the knees. They don't sell you...

Thanks, to answer your 2, I just re-edited the video and took out that part, but I want to get more football did me throwing to second because I have gotten better and they have gotten faster and are now under 2.0. And for 3 I will do that when I make a new video sometime. Also will try to get hitting. Would hitting off a tee work?

Like Coach2709's idea of some recoveries after block. Also suggest being on a field that is not all dirt + has a bag at 2nd base for you to throw toward. Good job, keep working!

I will get block and recover video sometime. Finding a field with a grass infield is rather difficult with where I live and most of the time the bases are put away in the sheds which I do not have access to. I will try my best next time to do what I can.

It is a Coach's Guide to teaching catching, but any Catcher can learn a ton from it. From what I can see you have talent & desire. Learning more advanced fundamentals in the craft of catching can only help! Best of luck!!!!

See if one of your coaches would be willing to help grant access to a field, they all want to see 'their boys" do well. Some other sources for you (get for your birthday or Christmas): http://www.coachingcatchers.com/; http://www.catching-101.com/; https://coacheschoice.com/p-21...atching-drills.aspx; http://brentmayne.com/ . Some of the authors are members here on the HSBaseballWeb. Keep reaching for the top!

Thanks for the resources. I do have the Catching 101 book by Xan Barksdale. I also have the Art of Catching book by Brent Mayne. I will look at getting the other books. Thank you for all the help. I will try to get some hitting video today maybe and get some more video of throws to second as I am not satisfied with the footage that I do have on my video.

Re: See The Gear

Sooo...this is getting really cool. Our Instagram following has grown to 9200+ followers in just 2 months. We have shot a few videos which we are in the process of editing them for YouTube. We show the best gear from the top players and teams at all levels of baseball. Some really big names in baseball have contacted us so we have some neat things in the works. We have started a website - seethegear.com. As of right now, it resolves to our facebook page but that is changing soon.

Try to get rid of the arc on the ball. Get on top of it and fire a bullet to the bag.

I will work on that! What is the best thing to do for arm strength? How often can I long toss and do band work? I do band work like 3 times a week and use it to warm up before a game.

What to do with all of those videos!

rtlyoung ·
Over the last year, I've been collecting videos of my son's at bats fielding and base running for a couple of reasons. First, I share them with his private coach for training purposes. Second, to help put together a short video that can be provided to college recruiters. The question for the HSBaseballWeb community is what do you guys do with those videos? Currently, they are on my Apple iphone and I'm just about out space. What I really want is to create a space where I can save them and...

I have iCloud storage of 50GB. Having the videos stored on iCloud makes video editing easier when I can download directly to my PC. I also have a 1TB external hard drive, although not accessible to the web. We use Adobe Premiere for video editing and occasionally Movie Maker on the iPad if we are in a hurry. I then upload to YouTube and he sends it out to coaches. As you mentioned, the quality goes down a bit on YouTube. I'm sure there are ways to upload the HD version to the cloud and send...

Welcome! What about a laptop? How are you going to combine in-game clips into a recruiting video? Do you really need to share all the individual clips? For sure you can/should put the recruiting video on Youtube or similar.

Last season's Viseos are now old. You'll need to pick up again during HS and Aummer. Archive them and use them for practice. Best Buy has good laptops on the cheap and Icloud storage is needed.

First, get yourself some iCloud storage and move your videos from your iPhone to your iCloud account. It’s a monthly subscription but relatively inexpensive, and that will resolve your phone storage issue. You can share iCloud videos with anyone who has an Apple account. If you want to share the full-sized video files with non-Apple users, you might want to put them on something like Dropbox (check the monthly fees). Personally, I’ve become anti-google over the years as they increasingly...

I saved them on a digital drive for the longest time, transferred them to a youtube channel and they are still there but not visible, also have them on Google Drive and often watch them if i talk with my son or he brings something up. Two days ago was his first live coming off rehab and his 4th pitch was a 105mpb line drive off his inner knee, lower quad and as our family group text bantered back and forth about the incident, i sent him this and jokingly questioned his "cat like " reflexes...

For your own file storage, Google Drive is great. For sending to others, not so great. Sometimes to view a Google Drive file, the viewer has to be logged in to Google. It's annoying if the viewer has multiple Google accounts, or maybe no Google account. Adds an extra step. I know myself I sometimes don't bother to look at Google files if I'm not logged in to the account where the sender sent the email. If the point is to make it as easy as possible for people to view, I'd use Youtube, so all...

Anybody notice the new YouTube Shorts thing they are doing? Seems like any video under a minute is automatically uploaded as a YT Shorts and at a lower resolution. I'm not sure of a work around yet but I just added 1 second to put it over a minute. Not sure what to do with a 30-45 second clip.

After shooting video on my iphone, my son and I went through it together and he chose the best shots. i got rid of the rest. We pasted together the good stuff and posted it on you tube and then sent out links. I used imovie to do all the editing. It worked fine.
