Sunflower Collegiate League
My son is a freshman at a competitive mid-western D1 JUCO and is in the process of trying to figure out a summer collegiate opportunity. He has been referred by his coach to a team in the Sunflower Collegiate League. The league recently added 4 teams from the now defunct Jayhawk league. Does anyone have any thoughts on the level of competition this league will have? Or how it would compare to the other collegiate leagues? Thanks!

Interesting How College Summer Ball Temp vs Full Contracts Can Work Out
I posted this in a recent thread having more to do with Collegiate Summer Leagues leading to draft...thought it would be a beneficial story to others going down this path in the next few years: Coastal Plains HC calls son yesterday asking him to come down for last two weeks. Said he'd rotate him between 2B, SS, 3B and play every game. This was the Temp Contract that ended due to the Full Contract guys all showing up. Amazing how this can work out.

Re: Interesting How College Summer Ball Temp vs Full Contracts Can Work Out
Austin got into the Cape Cod League out of MIT, a Div. III university as a “temp”—a league term for fill-in walk-on who plays at the beginning of the season until the big boys from Arizona, Florida, Vanderbilt, et al arrive, and end up leading the league in homers, RBIs, finish third in slugging, and as everyone at MIT understands, finished third in Runs Created and lead the league in Isolated Power (ISOP). ... http://www.gammonsdaily.com/pe...al-manager-from-mit/ Starting as a temp in the...

Gov, you probably remember the case of Austin Filiere from MIT who was a temp in the Cape Cod League, tore it up and eventually became an 8th round draft choice. Great story. But too bad it ended with him getting cut after 2 years in MiLB. *ha RJM beat me at the buzzer.

Re: Interesting How College Summer Ball Temp vs Full Contracts Can Work Out
I do remember Austin's story...very cool. And a bummer he got cut. He was able to pursue a dream, if only for a few years, but man, that is going to look good on a resume along with that MIT degree.

Re: Interesting How College Summer Ball Temp vs Full Contracts Can Work Out
I saw Filiere play while at MIT versus Tufts a couple of games. He definitely stood out as an “it” player in a D3 game. He succeeded in the Cape League against some of the best college players in the country. Yet he was released after a couple of adequate minor league seasons. http://www.milb.com/player/ind...r/R/hitting/2018/ALL I watch a lot of BC ball. One kid I don’t believe has any more physical ability than Filiere is plugging away in his fourth year of minor league ball with a .200...

Re: Interesting How College Summer Ball Temp vs Full Contracts Can Work Out
Was watching son's team last night as well as having recent conversations with him... very common this time of year for teams to start losing players and have to fill in for the last week or three, even surefire playoff bound teams. P's use up their allotted innings, others head home for a variety of reasons. Often, the teams will go back to those who came on under a temp contract seven weeks ago. Another interesting circumstance is how many players who were not getting sufficient innings...

Re: Sunflower Collegiate League
My son played for the Hays Larks a couple of years ago. Hays and Liberal would be considered the best teams in the Jayhawk league and would be competitive in mid tier summer leagues. The 4 teams that are leaving were not as competitive, and are joining a lesser competitive league (in my opinion).

Re: Sunflower Collegiate League
Thanks for input thus far. This will be his first collegiate summer baseball. I feel that playing against the best competition is the best way to improve. But is it better as a position player to go somewhere with assured playing time where he will (hopefully) outperform? He is a JUCO looking for a shot at D1.

Re: Sunflower Collegiate League
As a position player, you want decent competition where he'll play. Unless he is already shining as the absolute stud of his JC, this is probably a good league for a first year JC player. If the JC coach is referring, son should ask him what, if any, playing time arrangement is expected.

Beach Collegiate Baseball League Myrtle Beach South Carolina
Wanted to share this information with all of you. We had an absolutely horrible experience dealing with this league. My player arrived a few days late because of a commitment to his school and found that he would be staying with a total of seven people in a one-bedroom condo, even though the website says players are guaranteed a two-bedroom condo at the very least. The condo was so stuffed that players were sleeping on the floor in the kitchen next to the refrigerator. My player was forced...

Re: Beach Collegiate Baseball League Myrtle Beach South Carolina
This isn't a knock on the original poster, this is a serious question because I've never completely understood the need for 90% of summer ball. I'm hoping somebody who knows more than me can answer. If you're not a draft prospect and you're just looking to get reps, why not play in a local league where you're not paying an arm and a leg to live somewhere? What is the point of being shipped out across the country away from friends and family to play a full college seasons worth of games in...

Re: Beach Collegiate Baseball League Myrtle Beach South Carolina
If you aren’t a draft prospect and you haven’t yet earned meaningful playing time at your school there is a big benefit. A good college summer league can offer game reps against really good competition. If you didn’t play very much during your schools spring season, and you go off and have a great summer it can really change things for you the next fall. The reverse is also true. If you played all spring, and you aren’t a draft prospect, there is no need (or reason) to play any summer ball.

Adbono and PA: To gain the maximum from the Summer League, the team should be stronger than your College team and provide you with the opportunity to learn of your ability to compete in the game of life and baseball. There should be NO cost, except travel from home. If you record your experiences, you have info for several term papers for your College degree. Remember that there are pro scouts watching the strong leagues. Bob

There is a Texas Coastal League that popped up this year that’s owned by the same guy. I know players in that league and I have heard the same stories about it. You can find online complaints about Sean Lomas run organizations dating back over 10 years.

My son played in the Beach Collegiate League this past June/2021. To many kids were assigned to the rooms and he slept on the floor. Didn’t get a league tshirt and bars were scarce. Scout day was a pure waste of money and messages weren’t returned. On the plus side he got lots of playing time a s met some great player from across the country forging great friendships. If they can work out the housing issues and some other things it would be much better

Re: Summer Collegiate Ball for D3 Players
Most of these sites list a commissioner. That person might be able to put you touch with teams who need players. If no luck there, you can find the team owner/GM on most of these websites and contact individual teams. I don't have firsthand information about all of these leagues, but they all have D3 kids. Some will offer housing and some won't. You may have friends or family near some of the teams who would be willing to take your son in for the summer. good luck. New York Collegiate...
