NCAA recruiting and transfer updates
I was able to listen to a conference call recorded yesterday afternoon in which NCAA Division I representatives provided updates and answered questions for a group of Division I athletic directors and conference commissioners. Based on input from the NCAA’s Chief Medical Officer and the NCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel, we can expect that the current NCAA “Dead Period” prohibiting in-person recruiting activity will be extended beyond the current imposed date of April 15. We should learn more...

RICK; Is there any consideration by NCAA to allow the Colleges to create a Freshman Teams. This was created by the Colleges after the WWII and during the Korean War. Bob Williams "founder" of the Area Code Games

Re: NCAA recruiting and transfer updates
Bob, I'm not aware of that topic being considered for Division I baseball. Obviously, Division I baseball has a 35-man roster limit. However in D2 and 3 baseball as well as other sports, they don't have restricted roster sizes so they're allowed to have freshman or JV teams if they choose to do so. Two specific examples I've been made aware of are an Ivy League school that had a JV football team in the 2018 season and a JV basketball team this year at a D2 college that actually shows 56...

Rick; thank you. With the increase # of Juniors and Seniors remaining in College with athletic eligibility, specific programs may desire to create a JV or Freshman Baseball team as a "Farm team" to evaluate players on a daily basis. Intra-Squad games and games with JC could be scheduled. Bob

Thanks for posting Rick. I have a feeling you'll be getting a lot of calls in the coming months.

Rick, thank you for the information. I don't know if this has been asked before, but is there a website where the public can see the baseball transfer portal players? Thanks.

Re: NCAA recruiting and transfer updates
The transfer portal isn't available for viewing by the public. By the way, when you see bloggers and others who write about sports providing information on which athletes or how many are in the portal (such as high profile athletes in football or basketball) they are either being given that information by the athlete or somebody closely associated with the athlete, or a coach at an NCAA school is giving that blogger their login and password. For what it's worth, I've never viewed information...

Be nice if the NCAA had a few advocates for the kids.

Quoting it: Of course, that practice [transfer with no-sit penalty] has been standard for a few years now, as college athletes became immediately eligible at their new institutions as a first-time transfer upon the inception of the transfer portal. The memo continued, and noted the rules for athletes who did not qualify for the one-time transfer exception to become immediately eligible. “A waiver process remains available for undergraduate student-athletes who do not qualify for the one-time...

But coaches can come in and have zero requirement to keep guys. It's lopsided.

I just think a lot of people who say it's on the kid to have to transfer twice, don't know or haven't experienced the ugly side of college sports.

If you transfer twice, it is on you. Once might be a mistake or being lied to. Second one is on me.

Re: NCAA Updates Rules for Undergraduate Transfer Waivers
Any employer doesn't have to keep you if you are not getting the job done. Neither does the programs AD if the coaches aren't either. It trickles down. I believe this whole thing has to do with who is better at recruiting and who is better at practice and who can identify which player is right for your program and who isn't. I think that there is a lot of hoarding going on. Some coaches are better putting together a roster, others not. Not all is equal. This goes for every program in every...

And your employer can't then make you sit out a year....that's how that works in real life.

Re: NCAA Updates Rules for Undergraduate Transfer Waivers
If you are cut is one of the provisions to a second transfer that will probably get approved. But what percent are we talking? Less than .05% or less. How many guys can you name that transferred once and then a new coach came in and cut that player? That is probably when you need to consider moving down a level of play anyways. BTW, I've experience the ugly side of baseball twice but my kids are better coaches because of it. One stuck it out and continued to participate. The other changed...

Re: NCAA Updates Rules for Undergraduate Transfer Waivers
Everything is lopsided in favor of the schools over the players. Always has been. The primary purpose of the NCAA is to keep it that way. Now that some things have been done that favor the players, namely NIL and the one time transfer w/ no penalty, a lot of the old guard is losing their sh$t.

Re: NCAA Updates Rules for Undergraduate Transfer Waivers
But to be clear, that is in reference to a 2nd transfer for an athlete who isn't eligible for the one-time transfer exception (typically because they already used it up). And this should not impact a standard 4-2-4 transfers. Bottom line, it will make it less likely that you can play immediately after your 2nd transfer.

Coaches should probably have to sit out for a year if they switch jobs. Just to avoid any tampering.

Re: NCAA Updates Rules for Undergraduate Transfer Waivers
I’m joking. Of course they shouldn’t have to sit out…neither should a kid. The coaches are getting $$$, the kids’ hourly wage is almost assuredly below minimum. I actually kinda like Gundy’s idea of yearly contracts. At least everyone is on the same page.

Re: NCAA Updates Rules for Undergraduate Transfer Waivers
My son went off to school in 2004. There were players that transfered out and had to sit a year before they could play. I have friends whose sons did the same because they played a few games. Some chose the sexy pick. My BFF son had to sit TWO years, one for transfering and another because he didn't have enough credits for eligibility which he found out later after he transfered. It was like the wild west. BTW he went onto play MLB and an AA pitching coach. He didn't let the BS stand in his...
