Re: Should freshman transfer to JC from D1?
Update, my son believe it or not worked his way back and started the first few games. He contributed to a couple of wins and then made a couple of trips. However, once the other Redshirt became eligible (a senior with junior elig.) my son was then given pinch hitter duties. I think he did prove to himself that he could beat out guys and learned to compete against that kind of talent. The juco route he for sure would have played but I am hoping that what he learned from the experience was...

BobbleheadDoll, “I found that the student athlete works harder during the season so as to not have his academic standing in jeopardy “ I was talking about college. I work as a D-1 Academic advisor in college with a son who pitches in college and another son in college. Pretty familiar with college and athletes. A good Spring ensures fall elig. since there is a limit on the number of hours that can be taken in summer terms. But I know you know that. I was generally agreeing with TR.

Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
My son recently committed to a high academic D3 school. He's very excited about both the academics and the baseball program, however this is one of those schools that does not have "slots" for athletes. He has to get past admissions, and the school is extremely selective. I don't believe the coaches would have recruited him if he didn't have a chance, but it's far from a sure thing. His pre-read was not a slam dunk, but also not a "no". He'll be applying early decision, and that leads to my...

Gold standard for D3 field/facilities
Curious what the thoughts are here. Clearly one of the trade off for D3 is that the fields and facilities can be closer to high school than what we think of as next level. I've seen a few top D3 programs where I was surprised at just how bare bones the field/facilities were. Obviously the school isn't bringing in any revenue for the program, but some of the schools I'm talking about have massive tuitions so a bit surprising that the field/facilities aren't more impressive. Of those I've seen...

Since 2014 the number of bids have been somehwere around 56 teams. If you are interested in playing into the regionals and CWS, you need to understand how teams get those bids. Re: D3 Bids to the CWS
Thanks BLD, great explanation. This was maddening to me early on when my son started playing D3 ball on a very competitive national team. We would get stuck in a Regional with 3-4 top ten nationally ranked teams and they were arguably the second best team in the country a couple of years ago and were left at home because they ran into the best team in the country in their Regional. You just never saw this in D1 ball where they would seed Regionals nationally, which they do not do in D3 ball.

Re: D3 Bids to the CWS
Though some bad teams make it through and some very good teams stay home, people should know that the D3 teams that REGULARLY go deep into the regionals and possibly beyond are really very competitive. We're talking about a very high level of college baseball. Though I wouldn't compare such teams to teams that go deep at the D1 level, we are still talking some very serious ball. You shouldn't think of playing for teams of that caliber as an easy thing to pull off.

Re: Medical history request
Medical records are pretty standard if a MLB team is somewhat interested, IMO it is a step above filling out cards. If your son is projected to be in the top 300 draft picks he may get a letter such as this: Basically it gives any team the exact same medical info on a player, thus any and all info must be sent to this MLB clearing house. This will prevent a player from possibly picking and choosing certain teams he may wish to play for and give them different medical info. Yes I agree it is...

Re: Medical history request
2018 filled this out, however the teams will still ask you to fill theirs out as well. If you get further down the road, physical, bloodwork and MRI will be asked. If you do not submit to the MRI and you get hurt that can affect your bonus.

Ben, if you do send video try to make a really tight edit with nothing but simulated game reps and/or game action focused on you. A recruiting video should be 2-3 minutes, top. I tried watching some of your videos but honestly there wasn't enough going on. Your situation is a challenge but if you could shoot on ball field not a soccer pitch that would be good. You're doing the right thing going to Head First. Don't know about the Swarthmore camp, but it's a great school, so why not,...

Hi Ben, Welcome to the site. Thanks for sharing your videos. It would be interesting to see a few hitting videos. Regarding defense/catching - I want to give you honest feedback, positive and negative... You have some interesting physical tools and a good build but catching mechanics are still raw and very much a work in progress. I like your quick release and decent athleticism. But most of your throws, you spin off/fall off too much. Your feet are reasonably quick but they are often going...

Hi JGC, I haven't sent any video or edited anything yet. That video on my Drive is what I've been taking to evaluate myself and try and improve. It's still below freezing here in London for most practices, so the field is out of commission until April 8th. joes87, I'm an American citizen living in London for the last 14 of 17 years. I can't foresee myself transferring to a US high school, or attending a JuCo, but I have considered a gap year in the past. My intended major would be Political Science, and I have some contacts in Oregon politics, so working on a congressional campaign during 2019/2020 is a possibility, and would really strengthen my application. At the same time I could be seeking coaching on my catching and working on my physique.

Ben, no one has said this yet so I'm going to give you some advice I've seen given on this site many times: focus on picking a school that best fits your academic and career/life goals. As a high academic kid who has his major selected already, you need to focus on finding the school that best fits your academic/career goals. I would strongly caution you not to lower your academic standards in order to play college baseball. If you can attend an Ivy or other prestigious academic school and...

One school was willing to fly him down tutor him for a couple weeks for the SAT and have him retest. Re: Getting Scout Feedback
Purely from a financial point. Look back at the recent MLB drafts, what year in school, and how much of a signing bonus they received. Top $$ went to high school players, then college Jrs or soph who are 21 yrs old, and last the Srs. Srs have nowhere else to go, they used up NCAA elig thus no incentive not to sign. For example, a range of 20 picks (excluding a specific round for this example), let's say $200K - $300K they signed. Look at the Sr in this group. Probably $5K - 10K they signed,...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
Same thought... actually, I never fully understood the idea of committing to a D3 school where you are not academically accepted yet. The wise advice always given here is to keep the foot on the pedal until there is a reasonable level of certainty (even then, keep doors and communication lines open). Your description of his status is far from that... "... this is one of those schools that does not have "slots" for athletes. He has to get past admissions, and the school is extremely...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
Cabbage Dad just my 2cents but here goes just 1 reason to "commit" -- if a player has multiple offers of admission support for a D3 (even those very few elite hA without slots), they can only ED to one school (true for any ED school whether D1 or D3). You can apply internationally, to military academies I believe and also to state universities. So once the player opts to apply ED to their top choice, they let the other schools know they have made a choice and those other offers tend to go...

Re: Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
I'm mostly inline with 2Boys, but I can see a tiny bit of wiggle room. First of all you have to apply for the All Academic game tryout, and to submit that with incorrect info would not be an honest choice or fair to other applicants. To Adbono's point, a commitment to a D3 college _is_ a commitment, once the ED app is in. You're signing a contract that says you will attend that school if admitted (absent some limited mitigation circumstances.) But that said, if ED app is not in, and taking...

Thanks guys, very informative. I learned some things. Still, it seems that this player is not yet to the point where it wouldn't make sense to keep opening doors as backup. And, I'm not sure why the coach at school A would be upset if the acceptance is far from a sure thing.
