Besides the gap in maturity and situations with other players, many HS leagues/teams don't let kids that young play with older kids due to liability issues.
This must be a very weak team if the coach is interested in a 12yo for varsity. No matter the division of the school, you have to look at the strength of the other teams and the ages/sizes of the competition who your son will play. I'd be a very cautious.
8th grade is a good time to start high-school ball.. We had a couple of 7th graders that were good ball players and all about the same level. They wanted to be on the high school team. 2 decided to stay with high school and the other 2 went and played travel ball. Guess which ones were better by the time there 8th grade year came around , the ones that played travel ball against better all around talent.
No disrespect, but I doubt there is any 12 yr old that could help out a varsity team. IF that is the case he would be better suited playing travel ball..
