Welcome Max,

I see you are new on here.

I would venture to say thats fairly average if you are a righty. Now since you are new at pitching you can do all sorts of exercises to strengthen your arm. Long toss is one of the best.

Just a note, I've seen college games where the pitcher is throwing just a little harder than you, so with some work you could be right there.

Thank you. I am only a soph. so hopefully with some hard work and some good coaching I can get my velocity up there a little higher. I do have pretty good control and my fastball has movement. I just learned a change up and can throw it for strikes it's an awesome pitch. Gotta get better command of my breaking ball though.
SBK,
Were you just putting those numbers out or do you know Max?

The numbers I took before they all went with the site cleanup showed that a fairly elite 5'10" player who had just turned 16 would be expected to cruise at a tad over 80 mph. I would say that cruising at 76 mph as a sophmore is about average or even a bit above for a HS pitcher.
I've got a freshman RHP who is still six or so months shy of turning 15YO. He cruises around 77. Only about 5'8", so he isn't one of those big hulking pitchers.

76 would be middle of the road, I would think for a sophomore.

The good news is that Max is probably still growing & getting stronger. And hopefully improving his mechanics.
Mic,

Thats the difference, those throwing 65-70 at 16 are probably not the pitchers and if so on JV if lucky.

The HS years are no longer LL anymore and the better players move on up and the mediocre ones do not.

at 16:

Below average 70-

average is 75

above average 78+

But keep in mind kids mature at different rates, and yes late bloomers will eventually make it too.

CADad,

To answer your question; I don’t know Andy and only knew his size and weight from the profile he listed. As you know as well as anyone from the data you’ve collected, it makes a big difference if Max just turned 16 or is nearly 17. More important is where a 16 year old is in the maturation process as others have already mentioned.

I was curious where Max thought he rated himself among his peers for velocity. I suspect he is pretty much average especially since he is good size already.

I would recommend that Max look at the Data you’ve collected in another thread if he is interested in this subject. He could also do a search for “height and weight” on this board and see a lot of interesting info.

My not too profound suggestion to Max and velocity is that he is where he is, but he can take steps right now to improve where he is going. By doing some research on this site, he will find there is a wealth of good information on ways to improve velocity.
