My son is a 2011 player. He played up at 17U this year and it was a great experience. His team disbanded so he has to make a decision on whether to move on up to 18U or play with his age at 17U. He has been advised that college scouts will be at the 17U games more than 18U. Our experience this year was that scouts were at both because they played in tournaments that had both 17U and 18U teams in them most of the time. So if he finds an 18U team that is a better fit, will he miss out on a lot of recruiting opportunities if they play at predominately 18U tournaments?

There is no single answer to this. For one thing, scouts and college coaches know that lots of 17 year olds play up on 18U teams, so they do still come to 18U tourneys.

On balance, it is probably true that 17U events will be more heavily attended by college scouts. Depending on how far down the path you are in the recruiting process, this maybe should be the determining factor.

Grey area for sure.
It may not be a bad idea to make a list of target schools and figure how how to get in front of them. It may be their own camps, team showcases or individual showcases. At this point there may be a specific team rather than an age group that fits your son's needs. This is how I'm approaching it with my '11 son.
