Hey, I recently sent an email to the coach of a university, just a "get your feet wet" email. After about 6 days I got a return saying "you look like an interesting player. I hope to talk to you soon."(and some other stuff such as what is your mailing address so I can send info, etc.) So first question(I'm a Junior), is this the time to call and talk to the coach...and talk about what exactly? camps?.

Also, I'm a 6'2", 158 lb RHP, and I got clocked at 83 mph at a Top 96 camp. Is this velocity good for my age and weight etc. I'm definitely not close to filling out(my older bro is 6'3" and close to 200 lbs). Will I have a shot at DI or DII down the road? (my control and movement are all very solid, as are my mechanics) according to an Asst. Coach at Notre Dame.
"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...And one fine morning--So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." -The Great Gatsby

At your size and age, combined with your velocity, everything is a projection for college and pro scouts. To be seriously considered for a top D 1 school, you will need to raise your velocity 4-5 miles per hour. That isn't much and you should continue working hard on your strength and stamina. I say stamina because when a scout or coach looks at a player he looks not at a few pitches early in the game to determine velocity, but at pitches velocity in the fifth and sixth inning as well.

If your mechanics are good and your continue to get stronger, there is no reason to suspect that your velocity will not be in line with what top schools are looking for. Don't get caught up in the recruiting hype and work hard, and you may have a shot.

Good luck.
Hello fellow memeber. When i hear you talk it reminds me alot of myself at your age. This is a critical time for you in your baseball career. You sound as though your on the right track. As a former pitcher myself coming out of HighSchool and receiving a full scholarship I understand the level of competition you will be coming up against. As the VIRGINIA DAD said dont let anyone dissuade you from Div.1 endeavors. If you do the right things now as a junior and put 7 miles on your fastball by next year, you could be looking at a whole diff. situation. I believe that schools cannot officialy talk to you until after July 1 after your junior year. That being said, you can initiate as much contact as you wnat, but they may or may not be able to contact you back.

If you want some more personal contact, go to their winter camps and let them see you. When you say you got clocked at 83, was that where you topped out or where you actually threw most of the team. From what I've seen, you need to living in the 86-90 range to be even an average D-1 guy. At 6'2" 158, you have lots of time and potential to fill out and add the extra MPH!!
Thanks for the replies. To answer one question, yes 83 was topped out, most were 81-82, but I am not discouraged at all because it was during Thanksgiving weekend and its cold down here in southern Illinois, so the only time I had really thrown (and off a mound) was up until mid October. So everything I did from mid October till the Top 96 Camp mainly just consisted of "dry" mechanics in front of a mirror, not much persistent throwing (which will pick up again in January.)

P.S. Do HS Guidance Counselors have the paperwork or w/e for NCAA Clearinghouse? Thanks again for the replies.

You will find that there are many top players committing to schools before July of their Jr year. Schools can not call you until July after your Jr year, but you can send them a letter, email, call (they can't return your call), or text them all you want. You can even visit them on campus in person outside of the dead period.

I don't think winter camps are very effective in many parts of the country unless they have indoor facilities, how many players are in top playing condition in the dead of winter. How warm is it in Buffalo, it was 15 degrees in Atlanta today!

Many school camps are money makers for the assistant coaches at the schools and some prospects come out of them but again, I would not suggest displaying your skills unless you are in top playing condition. There was one player who was saying that he attended a Puma tryout this last weekend, he was not happy because he did not perform well in the 60 due to icy conditions and did not grade himself well in his performance. This was in California!

In terms of velocity, I would certainly suggest that you work on conditioning, getting bigger and stronger to increase your velocity, but there are many RH pitchers that are not at 90 in college.

Homerun - They cannot call him back unless it's after July of his senior year. If someone's a top player that will sign before that date, he'll normally have the coach's cell and won't have any difficulty reaching him though.
