Congratulations to the top twenty-nine vote getters that were emailed/write ins/tallied for the 2008 Maryland State Amateur Baseball Coaches Pre-Season All Star Team this week.

As reported at last night's VA-DC-MD Metro MSASB HS Baseball Qtrly Telcon, estimates for the total number of MSABC HS member coaches voting appears to be in the 60-65 range (out of 100 members). Estimates reported for total number of Maryland (public and private) High Schools represented at the MSABC Dec 2007 Winter Meeting (and the most popular of all the meetings) appear to be in the 34-40 range.

(Bear Note: From past MSABC meetings, more than one HS Coach from the same school has been able to vote, attend the meetings, support the head coach and represent his MD HS.)

The MSABC Preseason Awards Banquet will be held a weekend evening in February 2008 at the Warehouse at Camden Yards. Final selections will be made available to the public by MSABC, at the 2008 MSABC Banquet to be held in the Warehouse at Camden Yards, and is an enjoyable evening. Allow me to be redundant. The MSABC Preseason All-State Team will be introduced at that time.

As reported last, the following 35 MD Public HS as associated with the MSABC nominations process (and seeking verification) were represented
[Bear Q/L: and nearly double from a 4% representation from years past.]

Thirty-Four MD Public HS

(Not known, yet a frequent HSBBW poster, friend, and Eastern Tech Head Coach may have not attended the MSABC Dec 2007 winter meeting, and we hope for his quick recovery if applicable)

In years past, MSABC recognized 30-33 MSABC Pre-Season MD HS players at the MSABC Banquet, thus my apologies for such omissions as the information was not available last night....(Thanks Paul D)

Should a lover and fan of baseball and a DC-VA-MD Metro HS Baseball MSASB supporter be interested if a MSABC MD HS 2007 player was nominated [Bear Q/L of 61 MD HS players, yet not within the list of MD players & HS named above] for the 2008 MSABC Preseason All-State Team, please send email, identifying yourself, your email address, and HS player.

Bear,

Are you saying that this is the final list?
Was curious why there arn't more high school coaches voting. I'm sure all these players are very deserving but how can you have a true list if you don't here from all the high schools in the state.

Are all the high school varsity baseball coaches eligible to vote? Not trying to take anything away from these players. It's just lately in the Maryland forum i've seen alot of arguing about who the best players are.

Banditsbb
A number of years ago, when I coached at Atholton, I attended all these meetings and clinics, and participated in the pre-season voting. After my first year, I advocated for terminating this pre-season list. It does more harm than good. Too many coaches couldn't attend for one reason or another, and it seemed as though kids were not nominated if their coaches didn't show up. Due to rules that prohibit high school coaches from coaching summer baseball (believe it is the 80% rule), it always seemed like many of the coaches didn't have much feel for the other kids around the state, much less their own county. A few did, but many did not.

It seems as though a more accurate list could be created by members of this forum?
Larry....Well put. I agree. I had a similar opinion when at Good Counsel HS eons ago. I remember
disagreeing (it was really having another opinion) with your best friend Smile at Arundel HS, when he said (and outspokingly) "All [GC]is doing is hurting the kids." Did you know it is taboo to voice an opinion with these public coaches who have tongue in cheeks for the other kids around the state, much less their own county.

TrepFan -

Can you please just let it go? As has been hashed out NUMEROUS times before, PG is PROJECTING (the kid has POTNETIAL and has shown promise). It's very obvious you have an agenda with one particular player. However, that one player's '07 performance would be borderline to make this team even if he was eligible - which common sense says he shouldn't be.

- Didn't make first or second team all-met
- Didn't get invited to try out for the Junior Olympics

What don't you understand? PG's list and the MSABC list have DIFFERENT criteria! POTENTIAL vs PAST PERFORMANCE.
Let me start by saying, I have no knowledge of who he speaks of... But all responses point to Silverstein. That young man is in a class of his own. A true bonfide top flight prospect. However the whole issue is although a Maryland resident he DOES NOT play for a Maryland school. Definately a great ball player no matter how you look at it....
I think that it is great that all these kids made it to the the list. But there are a lot of very good ball players in Maryland and the last time I was at a baseball game it was a team sport not one player. With all the great baseball coachs and minds in Maryland why don't you all get togeather and promote all the great teams and players in the state to schools so alot more people out there know about all of the kids. Alot of people do not have the means to send there kid to every showcase that is out there. May be a little more help from there high coachs would help. May be the MSABC could from a task group to promote Maryland High School Baseball to schools across the country. Just my two cents worth.
Spike - the rules are the rules about playing in Maryland... I do not see the big deal....

besides -

NOBODY has to defend Silverstein. If U of Virginia was not his committed college, he may just have gotten an offer so good he would have had to turn pro right out of High School. If you are a player - you will be found. That is why scouts for the pros and colleges are "paid". If there is a gem out there, they will find it.

I am convinced scouts have notes on most high school players either based on showcase stats or just public school stats. If a kid is throwing 90 +, I do not care if they are living in Sweeden, they will be found. Same goes for a kid that can hit a ball 450 + feet.
The reason most of the maryland high school coaches aren't promoting their kids is because most of them are not that good.(Granted there are some very good players to) But if you compare MD baseball to states like California,Florida,Georgia...ect. Maryland doesn't hold a candle to them.

Therefore the kids in MD and other states that are not known for baseball have to attend showcases and national events to get recognition. In the 'baseball' states playing in your high school season may be all you need to get a college scholarship and get recognized.

This "lacrosse" state of Maryland just might have more baseballers from this senior class than laxsters. baseball talent in Maryland is very healthy. Plenty of kids not mentioned on any lists can play, too.

Hey baseball 12532 - I wouldn't waste your time with baseballdud08. This guy is an 08 grad that probably got passed over for something so he is sour. there is too much good stuff on this site to talk about.

In terms of a national perspective, according to Baseball America, zero (0) 2008 High School baseball players from the State of Maryland are estimated to be considered during the first three (3) rounds of the 2008 MLB draft. It appears that from a local point of view, there are a high number of very talented high school players representing the State of Maryland that will be very successful in college......but from a National perspective -- Texas, Florida, California and the Carolinas are known for their exceptional talent -- and the number of player currently signed with top 10 Division 1 schools is heavily weighted towards those residing in the States noted above.
I'm not familiar with Trepfan's BA research (haven't checked it out yet), but as someone who has been fortunate enough to be around some scouts over the past 16 years, I can tell you there is a big difference between even a major division I talent and a pro prospect. Pro prospects are physically gifted, and many times with undeveloped skills (a high ceiling as it were). Major division I prospects can help a team like Wichita State get to Omaha as a freshman or soph. Keep that in mind when trying to distinguish big time talent with real big time talent.
There are differences between and among the following:

A. A top HS senior in the state of Maryland
B. A top college Jr/ Sr in a Top D1 Conference
C. A 3 yr pro player in MiLB.
D. A big leaguer, rookie year.
E. A five year big leaguer (big time $$$$)

email me, and we might be able to discuss examples and names of each and for over the past sixty years.

Including:
1. A Top MD HS Senior, played at a top D1 Conference, played seven years in AAA, and never got to D & E.

2. A Top MD HS Senior, played at a top D1 Conference, played couple years in the MiLB,
and has a huge contract after 3 years Big Leagues.

3. A Top MD HS Senior, played sparingly at a top D1 Conference, played one year in the MiLB,
and has Big League experience.

4. A Top MD HS Senior, never played in college, played couple years in the MiLB, and seeks to maintain in the Big Leagues.

I think my list is nearing a count of 66, and of course when I get the opportunity to be around the old timers that know, a hour does not go by where we ask: What happened to...... (fill in the blank)

And for those that know (or know me), I just want to say..very cool .... yesterday, I had a tour of the new Stadium in DC. Today, I was having a bloody Mary just beyond the left field pole at Miller Park. Tommorrow, it's on to the Duck Pond before heading to Helena, where the $2M for a new stadium was approved. Also joined a Gold's Gym (with goal of twice a week - to start).

Congrats to all HS boys on the 'official' MSABC Pre-Season 2008 list. Dinner over-looking Camden Yards is cool. Very cool.

cheers
