Greetings all. . . I am a long time lurker and a new poster so bear with me. . . you are all an awesome community with a wealth of information! I have personally enjoyed reading and re-reading many of your posts. . . now I have a couple of questions I cannot seem to lock down. . .

My son is currently an early sign DI position player and is very excited about his new opportunities. .he was very fortunate to be selected to some great venues, ie PG Nationals, Area Code, etc. . however about the time we thought we had the "college" info down, the Pro interest has sky-rocketed. So, we are preparing for a great Senior season and trying to collect/be informed as much as possible about the draft possibilities.

Thanks in advance for your help!

1) Is there an efficient way to locate specific Pro-Team Workouts prior to the draft outside of those offered by our local area scouts? Do Pro-Teams post open tryouts somewhere?

2) Is a Pro workout something we should aggressively pursue (likened to the PG route/Area Code etc) or is the fact that he has made several of the teams "watch" lists and a great senior season enough?

3) Has anyone had experience with sending the Pro Teams a letter/bio or the like? I found this idea in the HSBBW Parent help section on the home page which was actually a question asked of several scouts, each with differing opinions of course! Smile

gobig,

Feel free to contact me if you'd like. Either PM or email jerry@perfectgame.org

Not sure which Oklahoma player your son is, but if he was at the PG National I'm guessing he signed with Oklahoma State, Missouri, Tennessee or Wichita State. All of which could create some serious pro interest as well.

Chances are that he will be followed closely in the spring. There are some things you can do, but if they are truly interested they will initiate everything. Not sure there's anything to gain by sending them letters. Probably no harm either.

Same goes for the predraft invitational tryouts. These are all initiated by the individual clubs. Requesting is usually not part of that equation.

My guess is you're probably past the stage of attending open tryouts, but there is no harm in attending them if you want to.

My guess is that this will all fall into place without much effort on your part because it is quite obvious by the events your son has attended that he is known by the scouting community. Has anyone requested home visits yet?

Best of luck
gobig, glad you moved from the lurker stage to one of those being lurked at.

I think you will find that the invitations to pre-draft workouts will be initiated by the teams. Most of the invites came during the in home visits that happened over the winter and early spring. Others came as it got closer to draft time.

Good luck and enjoy your sons final HS year, it will be over much to fast.

I think you want to attend the predraft workouts not an open tryout, to which I am not sure you can or should try to invite yourself....you don't want to look to eager to signSmile

In So Cal many of the local workouts last year occured from the second week of May to the last week of May. Depending upon your son HS team schedule you might find that he's unable to attend even if invited as the entire process must be completed prior to the draft.

For the most part I think the predraft workouts are for the crosscheckers and some front office people to verify the scouts evaluation of your $ons talent in comparison to how much he is asking for and to tidy up their draft board.
Thanks so much for each of your responses!

Smile PG Staff, Mr.Ford - First, we are huge PG fans and truly admire the work your organization does! Yes, our college choice seems to be a great one, and that is an important point, as we see great value in continuing his education as well as researching the possiblity of being a draft choice. The venues he has been able to attend thusfar have brought great attention and with that my question was do we need to be doing something we are overlooking?

Smile Jersey Dad! I really enjoy your posts too! Thank you for the comments and the time frames - I think without saying it, timeframes are something we all consider through the process. . .

Smile College Parent - You hit the nail on the head! We really aren't eager, just trying to cover all bases so to speak Smile He has been very fortunate to have already been invited to more than a few Pro workouts, directed mostly by our area scouts, but others have been there too. I just wondered when/if we should be going a little further. . we only get to do this once, he is precious as a player, athlete, and student and we just want to be as helpful as possible and remain solid in our thoughts.

Smile One inhome has been conducted and a few more inhome visits have been discussed, and with that do I assume we are just fine to lay back now and concentrate on that exciting senior season. . (pssst thats what I want to do anyway Smile)

I think the words of wisdom that I greatly appreciate about the members of this website are those that allow us to "somewhat" go with our guts. .

I can only speak for our journey so far but I can say it has been the biggest emotional roller coaster ever. . but mostly my son has been the finest driving force for the rest of us. . . he has worked long hours/hard hours (like many of the rest of yours has already done & continues to do) and he never complains. Many days he is the one we look up to, and now we just want to be able to "guide" him so that his journey may continue to be "fun"!

I so respect your words of pro ball being a business, and I wonder if I am the only parent in the world that would like to keep him here with me forever? Ha! I know really what I want is for him to be secure in his decisions, driven to be a leader to himself and his teammates and continue to love the game. . . which is why I afore mentioned that I am very (shhh) quietly hoping to sit back and savor this Senior Season!

If anyone does think of anything we need to do, please post as I know I am not the only parent in this part of the timeline, and we too are learning as many of you already have. . . we so appreciate your insights and learning as we all go Big Grin
