North beat Trinity 5-0 at Holman Stadium. Kyle Turner started for North and I had him at 85-88 in the first. I had to get back to AB after the 3rd when the score was 1-0. Run had come in on an RBI infield hit by Adam Leith.

Memorial beat Nashua South 6-2 at South. South had four different pitchers get innings and I heard the Memorial pitcher was throwing lots of off-speed.

BG 9 West 0. I don't believe there was an earned run in this game. It was 2-0 after 5 1/2 with single runs in 1st & 2nd on wild pitches. In the bottom of the 6th the West pitcher really got tired and the wheels came off the bus. For BG Cody Gilchrist pitched really well and was helped by a couple of very nice double plays.

Update: I've been told it was Clayton Welch that pitched last night for West.

Somersworth beat Bow 3-1. Junior lefty Josh Jaques went the distance, gave up 3 hits, no walks, struck out 7. Bow looked very good, only one error, Bow brought in a lefty pitcher in the 5th, who really shut Somersworths hitting down. Struck out the three and four hitters. He had a live fast ball and a very nice change. Does anyone know his name?
How good is Portsmouth? I know they have won 63/4 games in a row, and the national record is 75. I would like to hear from coaches, are teams using their #1 or #2 pitchers against them? Or saving #1 and #2 for games they think they should win? With such a short season does that make sense? And if that is the case Portsmouth isn't seeing the best teams have to offer?

This is nothing against Portsmouth and their program but I thought a good topic.
I’m not a coach, but I can offer some insight into the two games they played against Bedford last year. The regular season game featured Jones for Portsmouth against Olen for Bedford. Olen pitched well for Bedford, going 6 and allowing 5 runs, but only 1 earned. He even received kudos on this blog from NHMonty based on feedback from Mike. Portsmouth got 2 key runs off the reliever in the top of the 7th. Jones was cruisng through the first 6 and then Bedford got to him in the botom of the 7th. Just as the reliever was scrambling to get ready, Bedford killed the rally themselves with a bad decision to try and take home from second on a sharp single to center with one out. Final Portsmouth 7-4.

The Class I final featured Jones again versus Maher for Bedford. A great pitchers’ duel with the pivotal stretch being the bottom 4th/top 5th when the bottom of Portsmouth’s order delivered 2-out clutch hits combined with a misplyed ball in the outfield and a wild pitch that clearly slipped out of Maher’s hand to score 3. Bedford loaded the bases in the top of the 5th and Jones worked out of the jam allowing a single run. Jones ended the game with a K stranding 2 Bedford base runnes. Final Portsmouth 5-1.

Jones was clearly the Portsmouth ace and his early success as a freshman at Wake Forest confirms just how good he is. Maher (Northeastern) and Olen (SNHU) were juniors but definitely Bedford’s 1-2 and you might even say 1a-1b. Portsmouth was a complete team as evidenced by the fact that it was the bottom of the order that delivered in the clutch in the Class I final. They were well coached and they didn’t beat themselves. Jones and Montville were sophomores when the unbeaten streak began and they carried the winning tradition forward with obvious help from other talented players along the way.

I think any team that would skip their #1 or #2 pitcher against Portsmouth wouldn’t have beaten them under any circumstances. I can tell you the Bedford players thorughly enjoyed their games against Portsmouth. They respected what they had accomplished, but they were not intimidated. The seniors from last year would have loved a re-match. The good news for Maher/Olen and the rest is that they have Portsmouth on the regular season schedule and hopefully a re-match at the “Merch” in June.
BG won a 2-1 extra inning affair vs. Trinity. Well pitched on both sides - Trinity going with freshman Giampetruzzi and BG with Christian. Winning run scored on passed ball after a double steal. A more detailed write-up can be found at the NH Sports Forum in the Baseball/HS & Amateur section:

Devildad - next week will be big for Salem - do you think they'll go with Poore vs. Turner on Monday? That'd be a great game to go see... Then it's off to Holman for a Wed. night game vs. BG.
salem beats pinkerton 3-1 to move to 3-0. was surprised how well astros played, not to say they can't but was told they were a little down this year. what I saw was a good defensive team that hit and pitched pretty good.Salem was scoreless thru 5 and down 1-0. put up 3 in the 6th and breen closed it for loguidice. defense again solid with couple of double-plays and great work behind the plate yet again from treff. 2 more thrown out (runners are 0 for 4 so far ).big hit for stewart in 6th with 2 out to tie it,fouled off 4 3-2 count pitches before delivering. bouvier capped the inning with a bases loaded single to score 2.
yes it is true the salem defense threw up in thier mouths in the 5th inning. shortstop overthrew firstbase with two outs and bases loaded , then 1st base overthrew third allowing all four runners to score. especially painful as the shortstop happens to be my son.on a different note, how a coach allows a pitcher to throw 131 pitches on a 55 degree day in april on the 4th game of the year is downright stupid. this is also the same coach who totally dtressed down his sophmore catcher (who I happen to think is a tremendous ballplayer ) ten feet from homeplate directly in front of parents. also spent entire game berating umpires for missed calls ( some of them warranted, such as the two balks by poore that weren't called. ). I am far from being a touchy feely guy but this man is WAY over the top. just my opinion.
Turner throwing 130+ pitches this early in the year is a bit insane, but Turner pleaded his case to finish the game. Whether or not the coach puts his foot down is his call.

Congrats to Souhegan's Terry Dugdale on his huge win last night, 15K's and one hit in a 3-0 win over Milford.

St. Thomas gets their first win over Goffstown 5-4, big confidence booster for the relatively young team.

Dover continues their torrid hitting by ten run ruling Londonderry 12-2. They are a big surprise team this year.

Manchester West defeats Trinity 9-5. Clayton Welch went the distance for West while striking out 9. Mike Beaudet went 6 allowing 7 runs, 4 unearned.
Heard this game was full of errors by both teams.
I didn't realize I was posting excuses. It was a Big game for North to beat Salem away, with our best pitcher on the mound, who never has a sore arm, and by the way was getting stronger as the game got later in the innings. I tend to think Poore might have wanted to stay in his own game with the same situation. By the way I don't agree with many of the coaches decisions or instructional methods either but it is what it is and you get used to it. Lets end this it's done.
Sorry if I was unclear earlier.

When I said don't blame the player for staying in it was meant as a general comment, not directed at any past posts.

It was just meant that all the responsibilty in a situation like this belongs to the coach. Teenage players want to compete and can not be expected to always makes the best decision. They are still teenagers.
It might have been a better game to watch had the portsmouth "fans" demonstrated some class... The entire game they were berating the STA players w/insults and ridicule. Especially the STA who live in ports. Meanwhile supposed adults from ports. did/ do nothing... this is par for the course. Shame on them! Total disrespect for the game.

Don't go to a college game down south.
Don't go to a college game anywhere. I was at St. A's Tuesday when they played Bentley, and the St. A's fans were a hoot all game long.

I was also at the St. Thomas - Portsmouth game Monday with another Bedford dad, just to watch Taylor against Bean. It didn't disappoint. Great game. As soon as I got home I told my son how much class both teams showed during such a battle between rivals. Hats off to Keagan Taylor who never missed a beat after giving up a leadoff single and homer in the first to fall behind 2-0. Same for Jordan Bean who got hit hard in the 3rd but never lost his composure, getting the last out and then the remaining nine in order.

We were sitting on the Portsmouth side just past third base for most of the game and then moved to left field when the sun went down. We didn't hear any jibes at all from either side. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but I'd assume it was an isolated few.
