Definition of Participation (Equity in Athletics - EADA)

Students who, as of the day of a varsity team's first scheduled contest:

(A) Are listed by the institution on the varsity team's roster;

(B) Receive athletically related student aid; or

(C) Practice with the varsity team and receive coaching from one or more varsity coaches. A student who satisfies one or more of these criteria is a participant, including a student on a team the institution designates or defines as junior varsity, freshman, or novice, or a student withheld from competition to preserve eligibility (i.e., a redshirt), or for academic, medical, or other reasons. This includes fifth-year team members who have already received a bachelor's degree.

CollegeBaseballInsights - No doubt this is great tool that can be used many ways.

Ten years ago when I was using Equity in Athletics website it was as a comparison tool to check a program's budget for recruiting and operating expenses.   I wanted to understand what kind of financial resources colleges and universities were throwing into their baseball program as many were self-funded.   For the schools my son was considering the number of participation players was mostly irrelevant as it was typically in the low 30s.   There was a large budget discrepancy between D1 Ivy & D1 Patriot versus D3s engineering schools.   Just another one of those things to consider when you are making a big financial family decision and this data is available.

Are numbers in excess of 35 a result of redshirt players?  Is there any other way to have more than 35 participate?

I would assume it's a combo of players on medical waivers not counting against roster spots and scholarship players who left at some point during the school year and were replaced by walk on guys. So 4 scholarship players transfer, academically inelligible, etc and are replaced by 4 walk-ons that number is now 39.

Here is why it could be important, if you are researching schools, you will want to know if there is a pattern.  Understanding those student-athletes and parents that have done their homework and have read many articles, once they are able to quickly compare some historical trends, they will be able to determine if the situation is good for them.  Note, there is no right anwser, just another data point.

In 2018, Jacksonville state  difference was   35/39

You are correct. They were left off the list by mistake due to how they were classified in EADA.

While all others were classified:

NCAA Division I without football

NCAA Division I-FCS

NCAA Division I-FBS

In 2018 Coastal Carolina was listed as "Other" and a sub-classification of "NCAA Division I- FCS Reclassifying to FBS"

Thus information provided is off by one school. .

Where the EADA Student Participation can add some value when you are researching schools.  Most researchers look at the school website to determine roster headcount. If you are able to compare website vs EADA for a couple of years you might be able to determine where the trends are of a college might be.  Note, this will not address the fall school over recruiting issues, but it might provide additional transparency with respects to a family speaking to coaches during the recruiting process.

Food for thought.

Comments are appreciated.

When is the varsity team's first schedule contest?

In 2018, the Division I Council adopted legislation to allow two fall exhibitions, beginning this fall, that don’t count against your 56-game spring schedule. Previously, you were allowed to play games in the fall, but they counted against your 56-game slate.

I believe the NAIA rules are different, but you will need to research.

With all due respect, I don’t understand how your question is relevant?  It seems to me that the school can turn in whatever numbers they want, accurate or not?  Is there penalty for fibbing?

With all due respects, my question is relevant. As for if you read what I initially posted from the EADA guidelines, then you would understand what might be considered:

Definition of Participation (Equity in Athletics - EADA)

"Students who, as of the day of a varsity team's first scheduled contest:"

What is the varsity team's first scheduled contest? In the fall or the spring?  Do you consider fall exhibition games "first schedule contest".

If you would like additional clarification, the information can be found on the EADA website.

RoadRunner posted:

So you are interpreting the fall scrimmages as 1st contest?  I know some fall guys are cut before those fall contests.

It seems like you already know the answer, but going back to your statement

"With all due respect, I don’t understand how your question is relevant?  It seems to me that the school can turn in whatever numbers they want, accurate or not?  Is there penalty for fibbing?"

Here is the website for Equity in Athletic Disclosure Act. https://www2.ed.gov/finaid/pro.../athletics/eada.html

It will provide you the objective, additional information can be found with respects to penalties for not complying.
