Vols kicking off the season at home on Valentines Day against Hofstra. So we are headed out to Knoxville to watch. I am excited as my son go to hit reset on his freshman year due to his injury last season. The team looks to be more loaded with arms than they had last year. The bats will be the questions. Lots of firepower to replace from last year's team.

Good luck to everyone starting off the season. Praying for an injury free season for everyone who has someone playing.

My wife texted me the other day to let me know that CubsSon's profile pic was on the team website. Gotta admit I smiled when I saw it!

Son, a 5'9"ish RHP, didn't throw/pitch at all during the fall. Instead, they wanted him (and a few others) to focus on nutrition and strength & conditioning. He came into school tipping the scale at 154, and is now up to 167 and says he feels great. He is a later bloomer, physically. His program is monitored by the head of S&C who has worked in S&C for 2 MLB organizations, which is an added bonus for the baseball team.

Just started throwing live bullpens two weeks ago and is sitting in the low 80s. Command and movement have been solid, though he did have to change his grip a bit for a pitch due to the flatter seams (he did start throwing the college balls over the summer to get a feel for them).

Season kicks off the weekend of March 1st with two doubleheaders at home and then off to California.

Hope your boys have fun and stay healthy!

Nice surprise last night for my son. They had a team get together last night that they all thought was just something to kick off the season. They got their national championship and SEC championship rings last night. My son facetimed me when I was in the middle of baseball practice to show me his rings. Pretty awesome. Never seen a bigger smile on his face. I told him how special those were because there are only a select few people in the world who will ever own one of those.

It is going to be cold and wet in WV this weekend.  Will they most likely cancel if it is supposed to be 38° and raining all weekend?

38 degrees won't cause them to cancel unless it's crazy windy.   Throw rain in and you're probably gonna get the weekend off.....BUT.....one thing I learned early in my son's college career.....never make plans because of what the weather says.  Most places will do whatever they can to get games in.  The visiting team has already invested $$$ in making the trip.  They'll try to play if at all possible.   My son's team was on their way home from their "Spring trip" his sophomore season.  Had a game in Evansville, IN on their way home.  He was pitching. It was snowing....hard!!!    Game was streamed online.....with just a single camera behind the plate.  I could see him most of the time....could see the second baseman once in awhile....but there was no hope of seeing anything that happened beyond the edge of the infield dirt.

And if you are playing on turf, even rain won't cause the games to be canceled. I experienced this last year in Knoxville. Since they have turf, even when it has been an absolute down pour all day, and still raining, game is still on. Weather is looking to be all over the place this weekend. Sunday calls for a "wintery mix" but we all know that the game will still be played at some point in the day.

Looks like the weather is starting to wreak havoc on the beginning of the season. There are talks of now playing a double header on Friday as it looks like there is potential flooding rain on Saturday. Luckily we are flying out tonight, hopefully. Then throw in the wintery mix forecast on Sunday. Going to be a rough weekend for watching baseball.

My buddy texted me a few minutes ago with a link to his kid's game telling me that he's going in for relief. He's a freshman, team's second game of the season, and came in with bases loaded and one out. K'd the first batter and then a grounder to 2nd to finish the inning. So happy for him!

Since our boys were 7 they have played against and with each other. This young man never made a "top team" anywhere but simply worked at getting at little better each year!

Week one done. Have D1 coaches that will have 10+ incoming transfers (JUCO and other transfers) losing by 10, 20, 30 runs a game still keeping their six figure jobs while turning their rosters over and cutting kids in the fall. Maybe you are really bad at your job if you turn your roster over and still lose by 10+ a game? Crap coaches are going to do crap things regardless of the rules they work in.

Speaking of "D1" elite baseball...

Seriously though...

My son had 4 games "down  south" this weekend all canceled in advance because of the weather. That was it for heading "south." Now they start later this month up here in the northeast.

I asked him if they've had any practices "outside on the field" since they went back to school after the semester break and the answer was "no." I can't imagine trying to play a game, on grass, in the freezing cold, when you haven't taken a ground or fly ball outside in over 4 months. It's really unfair for northeast baseball players and I am not shocked to see crazy scores the first few weeks as a result.

Funny that you posted the Rhode Island - W&M score.  My husband and I went to W&M on Saturday to watch the Tribe - Drexel basketball game (our youngest is a student at W&M.). Shortly after the game started, a bunch of young men all wearing matching blue hoodies sat in the stands behind the Drexel bench.  My son said - they look like baseball players.  Sure enough, it was the RI team with time to kill since their Saturday game was postponed due to rain.

It's really tough for some teams that have had to practice indoors and have had very limited actual field practice.

teams practicing up north indoors have an extreme disadvantage at the start of the season (amongst other established disadvantages)
Son dislikes pitching in a Simulation environment or the half field dome thing..- other than increasing reps to reach desired pitch counts .
It's hard to gauge .. Kind of like hitting golf balls into a simulator. Maybe you can work on some mechanical items but otherwise its a crapshoot.

Just got back from Opening weekend in PR.  Son had to start against the #2 ranked national team. went better than anticipated (after getting beat up last week in an indoor sim game)...thank god...
Indoors=  major disadvantage.

We lost 5 to the draft, 6 to the portal, and another 10 to graduation. I did not recognize most names on the roster.

Figured it'd be ugly but we actually looked halfway decent and took a few games we were not supposed to. Defense was ugly, but I kind of figured that would be the case, not much outdoor work since Thanksgiving as we've been in the teens and low 20s almost all of 2025.
