What do college scouts look for in second baseman. I've heard a lot of things, but a main one seems to be double play footwork, and that they think they can theach you the rest, but if you don't have the right footwork they won't even begin to look at you. Just wondering if there's any scouts on here that will tell me the main things that they look at for second basemen. Thanks,

Scouts look for athletic kids with plus speed. Outstanding defender who can cover ground. Good arm and great glove. The dbl play footwork is something that can be taught. Most college scouts recruit SS that can move to 2B. Usually the SS is the most athletic player and best athlete on the HS team. If he can play SS at a high level he should have no problem playing 2b. Believe me if you can defend and play the posistion at a high level they are not going to worry about your dbl play footwork. If you have great dbl play footwork but can not defend and are slow with a poor arm that is an issue to say the least.
ok this is a great topic for my son. Ryan for years played ss/2b and played these positions very well. Good feet, great arm, good pivot and throw into dbl play and could cover alot of groud alowing 1st base to field bunts and know ist base was covered by his 2nd baseman. However when he moved to varsity his sophomore season they moved him to the outfield because of his sub 7 60 and above average arm. Now at 5'9 he isn't a typical college corner outfielder even though he plays LF and RF positions well. I feel he can play both infield and outfield and give a coach many options with one recruit. At the Area Code Tryouts in Pensacola in June he worked out at both even though he hadn't taking infield in 2 years and though he was a little rusty he didn't look bad. Now how is a college coach going to know this when he scouts him and only see's him in outfield or on the bump. Can we talk to the coaches, should we tape him at 2nd and SS. He really is very good in and out and is by far the best athlete on his high school team Tampa Prep. Any advice would be helpful.
Sounds like your son is much better suited for 2b at the next level. I would have his summer or HS coach talk to the college coach or coaches and tell them about his ability to play 2b. I would also make sure they understand why he played the outfield instead of 2b. It happens alot in HS a kid has to play out of his natural posistion because of team needs. College coaches understand this. He can go to camps and showcase events and showcase at 2b as well. I would definitely make sure he works at the posistion during the week to get up to speed.
Ryno,
I tell most of my recruits, that just because you played XYZ position in HS, doesn't mean that is what you'll play for me. Now to be honest I'm a pretty open minded coach so I don't "slot" guys. In HS, some players play a defensive position because that is what is best for the team, not for the player. I played MIF my whole life, and in college, but my senior year I was a catcher because no one else could catch the #1 pitcher. Sometimes it's a compliment.
