Can anyone tell me more about a three finger change up? If you are watching the Cal State Fullerton game, their pitcher has a very effective change and I believe it is of this variety.

This has also seemed to be a popular pitch used by right hand pitchers this year in a few HS playoff games I have scouted.

The action on the pitch is very different from a circle change because when thrown it has rotation that appears as a fastball and then when it gets to the dirt and grass cut out, it drops off the table. I have also seen a kid "thumb down" or "pinkie down" it for more horizontal action.

Any tips or advice about this pitch would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I think what you are referring to is a "straight change" I stuck in a couple of references for you. Grips are really preferential for pitchers and you just need to work with them to figure out what is best.

My son has a very good change, which he just happens to use a straight change grip. This summer he is working on pronating in more to get it to slow a little and break more with some amazing results. It will be interesting to see how it works when he starts throwing it against live hitters more. I did not see a straight change in Steve Ellis's stuff but search around his site and you should find it.
