Pitching, defense and the three-run homer.

It was a formula that manager Earl Weaver and his Baltimore Orioles honed to perfection during their ascent to become an American League powerhouse in the 1960s and 1970s.

Question: can a player teach himself how to hit a 3 run HR? I asked this question to Joe Rudi, Edgar Martinez

and Willie.

Weaver wasn't such a huge genius in this but he did articulate it nicely.  This is really not much more than the genesis of Money Ball.  High OBP + Power = Runs.  So stack the lineup with power guys that will take walks.

Getting good pitching and playing defense has been winning baseball for 150 years so nothing new there.  Palmer, McNally, Cuellar and Dobson go a long way.
