Less than 48 hours and counting for the meeting to revisit some of the new NCAA rules. I would imagine there are many programs, coaches, and players whose lives are hanging in the balance as they await word on whether these changes will stick. It will be velly, velly interesting to hear the results!

The new rule that allows a maximum roster size of 27 scholarship players plus up to 8 walk-ons. According to the rule, each scholarship player must get at least a 33% scholarship from the college's athletic funds. In the past, many players have gotten scholarships ranging from books or 10-20% all the way up to 90 or 100%. This new rule somewhat evens out the levels of scholarship amounts and it is anticipated that players who used to get books or 20% will now be asked to walk on and will get nothing in the form of an athletic scholarship.

The following was mentioned on another thread in the recruiting forum last night, and I believe it demonstrates the confusion and frustration that many programs (and recruits) are currently experiencing as a result of the rules uncertainty:

"One of my former players (MIF/OF)received a call from a top 25 program yesterday. The call was something like: we just want to stay in touch and we will talk with you after the NCAA meeting. We need tons of pitching and have no idea how we are going to be able to divide the funds if the rules don't change. Please hang with us and we will try to work something out but this is just a nightmare for us at this time."

There is also a new NCAA rule that requires athletes to sit out a year from baseball if they transfer from a D1 program to another D1 program, but I'm not sure if this rule is being reviewed or not.
.
Predictions...

Scholarship distributions?...Rolled back, Good for the largest # of players and gives coaches back more flexibility and control.

Roster sizes?...Rolled back or adjusted..Gives more players more opportunity...but more importantly gives coaches more control over more players.

Transfer rule?...Remains...No positive for player...but more importantly gives coaches more control over players both from a competitve and APR aspect.

Cool 44

Spoke with one head coach yesterday. He felt that the only part that may change is the roll back in % from 33% to 20% or 25%. He said the roster limits will not change nor will the transfer rule. They will remain as voted on previous. His feeling was also that the scholarship allotment will go from 11.7 to 14 in the next 2 years as a concession.

Again, this is only one persons opinion. Not fact.
Here's a Dream Plan

1) Raise the 11.7 scholarship to 14
2) Mandatory 28 scholarships at 50%( WHETHER YOU GIVE OUT 6 TOTAL SCHOLARSHIPS OR THE 14 EACH WOULD BE 50% NO MORE AND NO LESS)
3) Roster capped at 35
3) Guaranteed 4 years scholarships (similar to football and basketball)
4) Student must sit out 1 year if transfer's from D1 to D1 similar to Football and Basketball

How this would level the playing field

1) Creates parity in recruiting and in league play
2) No more false promises from some coaches
3) Protects the Student Athlete
4) The Student Athlete now chooses the school based on location, and courses offered and opportunities to play
5) Students would adhere to academic requirements imposed by NCAA

PRETTY SIMPLE IN MY OPINION

RYNO-
I love your idea!
Now will it have a sliver of a chance passing???
Probably not....

One item though, while from a practical perspective football and basketball scholly players get a 4 year scholarship, no sport/institution is allowed to "guarantee" a 4 year scholly. The NLI is very clear that the offer is for one year only, but CAN be renewed on an annual basis.......
Folks a bit of a reality check---I like this site as much as the other poster, if not more, but what makes you think we should have representation at a NCAA meeting??

This is just a simple website for baseball fanatics to talk baseball and discuss the recruiting process

Let us not get carried away with website hysteria
As far as the walk on transfer rights are concerned. Just implement a minimum play rule. If you haven't played x-amount of innings as a position player or pitched x-amount of innings as a pitcher in a season you would have the right to ask for your release from the school and could petition NCAA based on the minimum play statue.

example: *POSITION PLAYERS 1/2 INNING PER GAME
AVERAGE 54 GAME SEASON = 3 GAMES

*PITCHERS 1 INNING EVERY 5 GAMES 0R 10.4
INNINGS BASED ON EXAMPLE ABOVE.

This protects a non-scholarship player from being held captive by a coach.

JUST A THOUGHT
