Daily Press is reporting Grafton over Midlothian 6-4 and Kings Fork over Churchland 8-1.  Any insight as to what took place on the field?

Kings Fork will travel to Grafton on Wednesday.

In the bottom of the bracket, Nansemond River defeated Wilson 10-1.  NR was not very sharp from the outset.   Trevor Riggs had three hits and 6 RBI, including a 3-run HR.  After hitting a couple of lasers for outs, Shane Woods finally hit it where no one was standing for a solo shot in the 6th.

It is my understanding that NR will host the winner of the Hanover/Jamestown game.

This one should be one of the better match ups of any tournament.  These two are probably the best the region has in this group.  It is kind of too bad one of them goes home in the State Quarter Final.

Congratulations to Kings Fork making the State Quarters.  They have always had a rough time in the SED but they are really making a big run this season.

Agreed on all accounts.

Hanover and Nansemond River have been all year, and are at present, ranked 1 & 2 respectively, in the state in 4A.  Should be a very good game.  Looking forward to seeing Mr. Casey.  (I assume he will be on the mound, given that Hanover threw 4 arms on Friday, and he only threw one inning yesterday)

Regarding Kings Fork, they struggled in the first part of the season, but in week two or three they played very tough against NR.  That game seemed to give Kings Fork a new sense of confidence that they had been lacking.  Since then, they have played the very good teams close, and have beaten everyone else.  They have done a nice job.  They will have their hands full with a quality Grafton group.

You may want to check the Richmond Times Dispatch as they did provide a handful of highlights.

I did.  There wasn't anything there initially (early this morning).  I went back later in the morning and saw it.  Thank you!

I know Casey started for Hanover but beyond that, hopefully someone who was there can supply details.  Must've been a good game!

Hanover scored 3 runs, mostly off of NR mistakes,  (errors and free bases) against what has been a very stout defense.  Nansemond River third baseman has a chopper in the first inning, hit the lip and stay down, right between the legs.  That run scored to give Hanover a 1-0 lead.  The NR third baseman had committed ONE error the entire season.

Nansemond River worked Casey to death.  Forced him into long counts, drew walks, and squared him up several times.  NR tied it up 1-1 in the 2nd.

In the 3rd, I think it was, the NR rightfielder charged a line drive, and then just stopped...the ball landed just in front, hopped over his shoulder, and rolled all the way to the fence for a single + 2 base error.  A fielder's choice later, Hanover leads 2-1.

In the 5th, Nansemond River ties it up 2-2, and chases Casey from the game having forced him up to 99 pitches.

Nansemond River had multiple runners on base almost every inning.  (I believe they 12-13 LOB). The real story is Hanover's ability to less with more, and manufacture what they needed.  On the other side, NR outhit Hanover, but couldn't quite get the runners across when needed.  Also, Hanover's relievers, Moore and Denton, did a tremendous job of keeping NR off balance, in relief of Casey.

Robert Fitzwater was on the mound for NR, and flat out threw a gem.  I think he gave up 3 hits through 7 innings.

Hanover took the 3-2 lead in the 8th after the bases had been loaded with two outs, on a hit, a walk, and HBP.  The winning run was then walked in on a borderline pitch, before the final out was recorded.

NR got a leadoff single in the bottom of the 8th.  I forget how, but the runner got to second base.  The final out was made, with the runner on 2nd, as NR leadoff man, Shane Woods hit a missile 364 ft to center field.  The Hanover CF makes a fantastic running catch into the wall, which is 365 ft!   If he doesn't make that play, the game is tied.  With a runner on either 2nd or third with the meat of the order on deck.

It was a great game between two very good teams.  The sentiment afterwards on both sides, from those that I spoke to, seemed to be that the State Championship game had just been played.

It was a tight game from beginning to end.  A game with 2 teams of this caliber should be a tight game.  I will say that the strike zone was also tight.  Did I say tight?  What I really mean is TIGHT as a gnats butt.  Both starting pitchers and all subsequent pitchers had a hard time finding the spot.  Hanover was a little more aggressive with the bats while NR was more patient which drove up the Hanover pitch counts.  From the beginning, this game just seemed like one of those that neither team was going to win...someone was going to lose.  Very good teams and quality coaching.   I agree totally with GoHeels.  It was a great game between two very good teams, it's a shame that they both cannot move on.

I'm a Hanover parent and would like to extend my congratulations to both teams for a great game last night.  The previous postings captured the essense of the game very well...except not sure if a pitcher leaving the game with a 2-1 lead in the middle of the 5th with runners on 1b and 2b should be considered "chased off the mound" but I'm probably nit-picking the post.  I look forward to watching the regional finals and state tournament with the collection of highly competitive teams.

Never heard that "definition" before.  That is actually called "getting into their bullpen."  Getting "chased" means you got your hind parts kicked.  I don't think 1-2 runs would qualify for that level of pejorative.

The thing about Hanover is, getting into their bullpen doesn't help you all that much.  They will never run out of quality arms.  So it's nice that the head coach can lift a guy like Casey with confidence in a close game.  Had he left him in for 120 pitches, my guess is that would have become its own thread on these boards.

If a pitcher were getting his hind parts kicked, I think "knocking him off the mound" would be more fitting for such a case!  That certainly wasn't the case.  Perhaps similar verbiage is used in slightly different ways in different parts of the world.  Either way, I understand your view.

To clarify, I would use "chasing" to describe a scenario where a pitcher has been put under constant pressure, and the offense is forcing to pitcher to work. (whether it be via base hits or walks, or some combo thereof)  Which was the case.  I would use "knocking" to describe a scenario where the pitcher just got his you know what ripped!  My wording was intended to describe the lesser of the two.

Hanover's bullpen did a very nice job indeed.
