Saw this item - the NCAA Legislative group has voted against reducing the number of games to 52 while voting in favor of adding one more week onto the season. Still has to be approved by the board of directors.

"In another major action, the Council defeated Proposal No. 2008-48, which would have cut the maximum number of games on baseball from 56 to 52. The proposal was intended to reduce missed class time and refocus baseball student-athletes on academics, but opponents argued that the reforms the Board of Directors adopted as a result of the Baseball Academic Enhancement Working Group need a chance to work before further changes are made.

At the same time, the Council supported adding a week to the start of the season (Proposal No. 2008-46), thereby spreading the 56 games across 14 weeks of competition instead of the current 13. The proposal was approved by a slim margin, with Northern conferences generally opposed to the idea because their climate does not allow for earlier practice or home competition."

There were 3 diferent proposals to handle the "unintended consequence" that players were missing more classes. [Perhaps unintended, but surely predictable!] Two of the proposals would have taken down the maximum number of games during the Championship segment to 52 games, and the third was adding a week at the beginning of the season. It does not appear that anyone actually proposed adding a week at the end of the season.

The beginning date for practice is moved from February 1 to "The Friday that is three weeks prior to the first permissible contest date for the championship segment."

The comment period expired with 15 supporting and 6 opposing. I suspect that means the Board of Directors will choose not to consider the proposal, and it will become final. If they do consider and reject the proposal, then a 90 day override period will begin, similar to what happened when the 33% minimum scholarship was changed to 25%.

So why didn't any conference suggest adding a week at the end of the regular season? Probably a number of reasons, but I wonder if TV contracts for CWS might be the real issue?

CPLZ,

Like that's something new...

Sad but true, the NCAA is rarely about the best thing for the student-athletes. Ever since scholarships were changed from 4 year to one year renewables, the truth has been out of the bottle. If you wait for the NCAA to do what's best for the kids, you'llwait a long long time.
