I'm going to ask for opinions on the general principle of voluntary release rather than going into the specifics of the position I found myself today with a ball coming out of a glove. So, is it:

A. Assumed that a release is voluntary unless shown otherwise?

B. Assumed that a release is involuntary unless shown otherwise?

It is what it is (voluntary/involuntary) when the ball is released, not before.
So, here's what happened:

Grounder to F5, clean throw to F3 on a routine play. F3 possesses the ball, and I make a routine out call (which is about a second and a half after I make my decision.) As I'm making the call, the ball drops out of his glove.

Here is the crux of the dilemma: I saw nothing to indicate that the release was involuntary; he wasn't moving, he wasn't making any motions with his glove indicating that he was trying to maintain possession, etc. On the other hand, it made no sense for him just to intentionally drop the ball.
Since when did voluntary release become part of a tag (of the base) play? Did something change?

A tag is defined as holding the ball securely and firmly in hand or glove. Where does voluntary release come in? Is this something new not specifically written in the book?

I am asking b/c I have "heard" the Varitek tag play is no longer considered a tag under OBR. Is that true and does that coincide with the notion of needing voluntary release? I know voluntary release helps in determining secure possession but is it now required?

Yes, the Varitek tag play is not a tag. A voluntary release is never required, but if there is one, it is proof of control.
