Ok, not exactly....but that's what the umpires originally called.  Here's the scenario:   D2 state semi-final here in Ohio.  Runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Batter hits a DEEP fly ball to left that LF catches while running toward the wall at the warning track.  Runners tag.  Runner at 3rd scores easily and they send runner from 2nd...who beats the throw to the catcher.  Batter had rounded first and had almost gotten to 2nd.  Third baseman...not realizing that he was the batter who was already out....calls for the ball from the catcher....and attempts to tag the batter as he's coming toward him.  Batter swerves out of his way and heads to the dugout.  Third baseman then throws to 2nd to appeal that the original runner at 2nd had left early.   First base ump evidently thinks that the batter heading toward the dugout had "given himself up" calls OUT!   Team in field leaves the field....team batting heads to the field....as the coaches gather with the umps.  Umpire admits he blew the call...and had actually called the batter out for the third out...even though he was already out on the fly ball.  Teams go back to dugouts and the inning continued.  Strangest thing I've seen.

Anything and everything can happen in high school.  If you call long enough you will see some real head scratchers... from players, coaches, and umpires.

But in this case the umps got together.  Figured out what they had and got it right under 10.3  Which is their job.  It may have looked bad, but at the end of the day they got the call correct.

Remember, high school players are NOT pros.  They are kids, so they will make mistakes and we have to clean it up.  The better the players the more they will clean it up.  The less skilled the players the more WE have to clean it up.  And nobody came to the game to watch the umpires.
