I was reading some of Bart Giamatti's essays about baseball, this sentence stuck out to me, addressing MLB baseball players during the strike of 1981:

"You play baseball so that we may remember the future we want for our children, the future that always begins for Americans in the summer of the Elysian Field."

Now it all makes sense!
