Son number 2 had a wonderful fall, baseball-wise and academically; I had joked with him last summer that his magic number was "7"-I wanted his fall batting average and his GPA to add up to "7".
He fell just a hair short, but we were thrilled nonetheless.

Maybe this is the birth of a new statistic, in a wonderful game where there are countless statistics already kept!

cong,
You've got the concept right but your math is a bit off. The goal was 7, meaning a GPA of 6 or over to have a mathematical chance and over 6.5 to have any kind of a realistic chance. Of course GPAs don't usually get higher than 4.0 or 5 at some HS so let's just assume hokie meant to multiply the batting average by 10 and left it out because he figured we were smart enough to get that by ourselves. Smile
JBBaseball has it right.

Just like bats are "-3", although one is inches and one is ounces, I take for example .350 BA, and a 3.50 GPA, slip a decimal place on the former, add it to the latter, and voila, you have your "DAGGN" average. (Dad Ain't Gonna Go Nuts)

Hey, I'm a lawyer by trade. The only math we're taught is how to divide by 3.

Hokieone,......being a non-math major and possessing a multitude of blonde highlights in my hair,...it may have taken me longer than the average bear to figure out your formula,..but I GOT IT!!!! ( applause is always welcome! )

Very creative idea! I'm going to print your post and give it to my son. Insentives are always a good thing.
An extra kudos pat on the back to your son for his good Fall season.

Clevelanddad: Big Grin My size 7 shoe may not be as big as your size 11,..but I think our sons have no doubt where we stand on this issue. ha!
