Yesterday was the season opener for many high schools around here. While drinking my morning coffee today, I turned to the sports section to see if just maybe some box scores were posted. They were.

Our immediate community has 3 high schools (2 public, 1 private). All three schools won thier game yesterday. The three winning pitchers each played & pitched on one of the local PONY league teams I coached back when they were 13-14. I don't claim to have contributed significantly to the development of the 2 who aren't my son, but it was great to see them all having success.

That bit of news motivated me to take a look at how many boys that had played on my PONY teams were now playing varsity ball. I counted 14. It kinda makes that time invested between the fall of '03 thru Spring '05 seem worthwhile!

I coached Babe Ruth (13-15yo) and all-stars after college. Several years later I'm in a bar with my wife watching a band. A kid walks up to me and says, "Hello Mr. RJM." I asked him how college is going. I figured he was about twenty-one. "I'm not in college. I'm a branch manager at XYZ Bank." Time flies!

I coached my son for years in LL as well as ran a travel team for a couple of years and it is great to see all of the kids I have coached playing in HS now.

Kind of makes it hard though when we play my sons cross-town rivals (big rivalry game) as I find myself rooting for the kids that have played for me more than the team.
What gives me special pleasure looking forward to this season is the chance to watch two or three particular seniors play HS varsity this year. I coached these particular boys for several seasons in LL, but not on the "A" teams or top travel teams. They were never selected for those teams, were always "B" players until they got to high school. But they stuck to their love of the game and either got bigger, stronger, faster, worked harder or whatever it took to end up where they wanted to be. I'll love watching the whole team, but I'll have a little softer spot in my heart for these guys who stuck with it against the odds.
