It was reported in the News sentinel today that the overhaul on Lindsey Nelson stadium is on hold due to a lack of funds. Athletic Director Mike Hamilton is quoted as saying “we need a hero for baseball” and “that someone needs to step forward to make a leadership gift”. There was even talk of again moving baseball off campus to a new stadium if the school and the city could cooperate in a plan that made sense for the program.

The Lady Vols have indicated that they would be happy to locate to the Lindsey Nelson complex even though women’s Athletic Director, Joan Cronan is going ahead with plans for a new softball complex in Tyson Park.

Of course if someone would step forward to fund the $4.6 million dollar renovation that was announced two years ago but has been prevented from a lack of funding then all this could go away.

I would like to make a plea to all our Volunteers to come forward and help our athletic department make this dream come true. Think of the possibilities; Lindsey Nelson Fungo Park; Lindsey Nelson Howdeshell Field; Lindsey Nelson Bama Bomber stadium; Lindsey Nelson Recruitinator stadium; Lindsey Nelson Bizazz Field; Lindsey Nelson Tenndad stadium or Jolly Roger/Lindsey Nelson skyboxes. I could go on and on, but I know we can make this happen.

Who is first?

Let me see if I understand this:
1. The University of Tennessee is a school supported by the tax payers of Tennessee.
2. Most of the players on the baseball team reside from states other than Tennessee.
3. With a large % of the players being from other states they probably receive a large portion of the 11.7 scholarship money.
4. Mike Hamilton wants someone from within the state of Tennessee to fund the stadium renovation.

Is Mike Hamilton crazy or just plain stupid? Hamilton has done some strange things and had some goofy request on his watch but this may take the cake. It now looks like the stadium renovation will be placed on hold for a few years.

Good luck to the players but it looks like you will continue to play in a crapy stadium (SEC Stadards) with few fans in attendance.

The last time I checked the fooball team had sold out all of their games, what about the baseball team? The baseball team can't give away tickets and fill the stadium. I am not kicking the players but I do have a problem when the better players from Tennessee are passed over and forced to attend other SEC/ACC schools to play baseball. IMO Rod is trying but the reputation of going out of state is cast in stone and it will take a miracle for him to change that reputation. I know that we are a much more mobile society today than ever before but when "Ray Bans" can't/won't sign the kids that play on the same high school team as his son, the University of Tennessee has a major problem. The big question is does Mike Hamilton & Ray Bans really care if they get the best Tennessee high school players?

And from out of the hills of East Tennessee steps a promoter to re-juice the big orange machine. The man calls himself "HiwasseeVol"!! Ah Ha! This is an NCAA violation! I happen to know Hiwassee is an Indian name and I also know that using any Indian name in conjunction with a university ( such as fund raisers) shall be considered a flagrant violation of the newly adopted NCAA "Indian Name Rule". No post season play for the Vols for the next five years! Big Grin
Fungo,
Wrong on two parts...

First, My wife's Great-Grandfather's wife was a cherokee. I believe that will give us Indian ancestry by her marriage to her Anglo husband.

Second, To be a violation of the "fund raiser" clause would mean that someone has actually come forward with some money. I'm sorry, but to date, my plea along with Mr. Hamliton's has fallen on deaf ears. biglaugh rolleyes
