There are many strange rulings in baseball, but the poster is right "That's the way it is." How about the following.
A 12 pitch at-bat resulting in a strike out. 0 for 1.
A sacrifice fly goes against on-base but is not a plate appearance for purposes of batting average. The sac bunt is not a plate appearance and does not go as an at bat.
A ground ball to the right side also moves the runner over, is more valuable because it could go through, it could be an error, the runner could beat it out, but it is 0 for 1 and no sacrifice.
A great hustle by a player on a dropped third strike that got the player to first is still 0 for 1 with a K.

That's why I believe in "quality at bats" as a stat that is off the books. It shows how a player contributes to winning outside of the traditional measures. A 7 pitch plate appearance, a ground ball that moves a runner, etc.
