My son will be a college senior next year. He still has an elective requirement (liberal arts course) he still needs to fill. He'd like to knock it out over the summer in order to reduce his course load next year.

He can take this at a local community college for about a third of the cost to what it would be at his current school as a summer class. His academic advisor suggested he go this route.

Anyone have a kid that's done something similar? I am hoping that since he won't be enrolled full-time it won't affect his NCAA eligibility.

He's currently trying to confirm with the athletic's department at his current school.

My daughter did this.  However, you have to make sure that the university will accept the JUCO credit.  We had the class preapproved by my daughter's athletic counselor prior to her taking the course.  I believe, but am not certain, that some universities work closely with certain area JUCOs and have designated courses that they accept.
