Being in Michigan and with a tight team budget (i.e. can't afford multiple trips to GA for PG tourneys) what are the best tourneys to put a team into where the boys are going to be seen by scouts (pro or collegiate)?

We're starting the planning for our 2015 summer travel ball season and want to maximize exposure for all the boys on the roster no matter what size college they plan to attend.

We might be able to venture South (GA or FLA) once but don't want to lessen the odds for the boys by limiting our budget too much?

Responses greatly appreciated!!

Bob....so you're talking about a 16U team?  I'm from NW Ohio so maybe I can help.  We had a very good 16U team in 2013 and really never saw more than 4 or 5 coaches at any our games...and that wasn't until the last couple weeks of the summer (we have 3 kids committed to D1's so far). You'll see many, many more coaches at 17U....no matter which tourneys you go to.   The Pastime World Series at Ohio State in late July had the most coaches of any tourney we played at.  I'd also consider the Pastime event(s) at U of M.  They always had several coaches from across southern Michigan attending.  Also, the Buckeye Elite in Columbus would be a good one...and not to far away. You may think about the Flames tourney in Cincy....never been a big fan (expensive...and fields spread out all over SW Ohio)....but you'll probably see some coaches.   Feel free to PM me with questions. You could go to the PG event in GA....but unless you've got kids who are getting some college attention up here, you'll likely not see a lot of coaches at your games down there.  At 16u coaches tend to just go to games to see a particular player...not just show up hoping to find a prospect.

Yes, 16u, and we've played Cincy Flames tourneys and USSSA SNIT's at Flash so we've become pretty familiar with trucking it to Southern Ohio.  I had Pastime on my radar so thanks for the endorsement, will move those up the list.

And to Golfman also, thanks for the tip, will check it out!

Grand Park?  Indiana Bulls??  Did I find the right place?

Yep.

Bob, yes, that's the right place.  If your team is going to be "above average" contact the Bulls and see if you can attend a weekend or two of their "scout league". You'll play 4 games over 2 days...no tourney, just games.   There will be coaches there for 16U...but you'll be in with the likes of the Flames, Midwest Pelicans, Kentucky Baseball Club, Ohio Elite and others.  With regard to USSSA....16U is too old to play their events....especially in Ohio.  USSSA in Ohio fell by the wayside about 6-7 years ago and their tourneys are looked at as not much above "rec ball" down here any more.

Bob, same weekend as Flames in Cincy is Midland tournament. It is wood bat. Very high quality teams. My son just entered his freshman year at college. so I got to see the different interest levels based of age.

Buckeye and others are correct, 16U, what we saw was when they were interested in a specific player they would come. Occasionally in Buckeye Elite, Midland and some Pastimes we saw a handful once in a while. At 17U, with a quality team and in quality tournaments, your team will get watched every tournament. What we found out was college coaches asked our coaches to pitch best pitchers on Thursday and Friday and so we did. Of course, if you are deep enough to get to Sunday final 4 there will be college coaches to watch there as well.

My basic thought is know your team If they have aspirations to play south or west or wherever, then helping them get seen by those coaches would be nice. But if your players want to be "local" (I define local as within about 4-5 hours from home) then play local

You may not have kids who attract the scouts attention, but the team you're playing may have them. PG isn't "The" answer but Lakepoint is a fishbowl of scouts and a pretty cool place to play on top of that if you can get down here.

Coach Bob,

I would also look into Diamond Play Tournaments(diamondplaytournaments.com). They host tournaments at smaller schools in Indiana. Our team played at a tournament at Trine University, Angola, and there were multiple small college coaches there. They reach out to area college coaches and invite them in. Plus the tournament was very well run.

Elite Baseball Tournaments is another group that focuses on tournaments at college fields. They are at elitebaseballtournaments.com.
