Last year in a 14U tourney there was a team that was hitting 400 foot bombs. Unusual but can happen. Problem was every bat bag in their dugout had a brand new Mako in it, but the entire team was using an Omaha. It didn't sound like any Omaha I've ever heard. They used if for a few tournaments then teams started refusing to play them and they got rid of it. Funny no one on their team hit a HR after that. It was pitiful.
All I know is if my 18u team is getting beat by 14u, I sure as h&!! ain't complaining about the bat. You still gotta square it up.

I agree, if my 18U pitchers are being lit up by 14U players there is a much larger problem than that bat!!
"Now?" Bat shaving and rolling hit baseball at least 10 years ago.
Funny...my kid's team played a 14u end of year tournament and a highly ranked 13 squad showed up..this was a tourney with about 80 14u teams from around the south and Midwest. My son and I stay to watch them play their first pool play game, as we heard about the hype and he knew a couple of their guys from former teams, and they hit 3 bombs in two innings on a high school sized field, which were the only homers we saw on that field the whole tournament. The first one was on the very first pitch of the game, leadoff hitter, small kid, straight away center over the fifteen foot high wall. Similar type of situation, the first six hitters all used the exact same bat. I was expecting someone to ask the ump to inspect the bat, but it never happened. It could have been just coincidence, as they are very good (ended up losing in the quarters in this event, and a couple weeks later won a 13u PG nationals event), but it was a weird setting for sure.
if 14U tournament and BBCOR was not required, it might have been Easton XL1 -5 or similar. When son was playing 13U/14U I watched 125lb. kids launch balls over 400ft fences. Infielders would play on outfield grass to have enough range on balls off those bats.

Pretty sure son's team lost to them in the semi's of that PG tourney your refer to. They would have beat us no matter the bats. But some did share an orange Mako. One "kid" hit one at the Red Sox spring training back field that cleared the fence, then hit the second fence about 20 feet up. Groundskeeper said second fence was 400'. I say "kid", because he was quite manly. Pitcher also touched 82 mph on PG's radar, stayed in 80's on FB's, had a good hook, too.
The composite bats can reach a point in their life where they are super hot, doesn't mean they are rolled. And even if they are rolled, there is nothing you can do about it. I gave up on bat angst a few years ago. Same with birth certificate angst.
Son's org has them move to bbcor when they turn 14, so son got a bbcor bat a few weeks ago. We'll get beat in some tournaments this year bc other team uses the magic bats and we use bbcor. But that's alright.
^^ Sounds about right. If your son is on what team I think he is, that's a good group also and has been for many years... Mine played in that same age group in the same state until he right-graded last year. Best of luck next season.
Brocky,
Pulling up old posts to use as an opportunity to promote and place a link to your own bat rolling company is sorta frowned upon here. Do it the right way... get in touch with the powers that be and run an ad. If you want to respond to current posts about bat rolling, that's one thing but...
Bat shaving for competitive baseball is illegal. These sham companies get past the legality by claiming their service is only for home run derby competitions. Does hsbaseballweb want to endorse cheating that could physically harm players? His post should be deleted.
College coaches and pro scouts know of the metal bat situation and automatic take 40' off the HR. First you Learn to hit. Respect the game.

Umps here don't check bats at all. All they ask is that our team is properly equipped and all equipment is legal. But for softball, the umps check the bats other equipment very thoroughly, even disallowing slowpitch bats which are a disadvantage.
Are bat regs changing again effective Jan 1, 2018? I really haven't paid attention because my youngest is 14 and has already transitioned to BBCOR but I thought I heard that all bats, down to even the little dudes were going to the BBCOR standard.

Exactly.......IN baseball it has been determined that the liability for the use of illegal and unsafe equipment should rightly lie on the Team/Coach/Parent who introduces the illegal equipment into the contest.
Umpires should not be put at a liability risk by the illegal actions by Coaches/players and parents. Bat shaving or rolling is virtually undetectable to the naked eye
I have seen a shaved bat and to be honest from its outward appearance there was NO way for me to determine if it had been shaved. If I had not been told that it was shaved, l never would have known.
The NCAA and some major tournaments now use a scale to weigh and check the balance on bats brought in to be used. They must meet the same stats as the accepted manufacturers example. A tamper proof stamp is then applied. NO bat without this stamp is permitted to be used. Use of an illegal bat is ejection of player and coach from the tournament.
Heard a few JV players at a locally strong program were suspended from their school/team for posting a video of them bragging about using rolled bats. Son heard this yesterday at a big showcase here in San Diego. It's very much alive in the HS game, and who knows about the next level? There were two kids yesterday who dropped one bomb each during the BP portion of the showcase, and both were guys you would have expected to do it. Everyone else was staying in the yard, which is normal considering they are underclassmen.
At the Regionals in Hattiesburg this past weekend, bats were checked by NCAA. Rumor is that one team lost 6-9 bats. Son's team lost 1 bat.
