Son wants to give catching a try, so I am looking to buy some gear. I saw a set of the All Star catchers gear for players between 12-16 yrs (my son is 13. "Sports Unlimited" has the CK1216PRO set for $189 no tax and free shipping. The CK1216PRO appears to be an upgrade from the CK1216PS which is the Players Series versus the Pro series. My two (2) questions are, is the set (All Star - CK1216PRO) good/decent gear and is $189 a good price? Thanks for any advice.

That's a decent set. Without pricing all the individual pieces out, off the top of my head it seems like a good price.

I would offer this advice though...

You are really going to want to try on a set before investing in it. Especially the helmet. Some kids like the All-Star helmets, some prefer another type. The face pads press in different places, the cages are different, etc.

Given the run of the store, my son ended up with an Easton helmet, All-Star chest guard, and Schutt leg guards. (Mizuno glove and Nike cleats just to top it off) He couldn't have cared less about the brands matching - he just wanted what fit him the best. I was thankful I was able to at least get matching colors. As it is he looks like some sort of MLB/NASCAR marketing experiment gone wrong.
Thanks, I thought about that, since this is kinda of an experiment I was trying to keep the cost down by going the complete set route, but still have decent gear. I will take your advice and get him to sporting goods store to try stuff on.
The only problem with that is he will instantly fall in love with the gear he sees and tries on regardless of the cost. Thanks

All-Star makes very good stuff. I usually steer my younger kids to All-Star and my older kids to All-Star or Nike.

Yes, the PRO series is an upgrade to the Player Series, but I feel the Player Series is still a great product.

I recently picked up an extra All-Star youth set with the Player Series chest protector, Youth Helmet, and youth PRO leg guards for $110 for the set.
Just got a new set of System 7 gear for my son. He's 12, but had to return the 12-16 YO set as too large. He's grown a lot in the past few months but is only 5'2" and seems taller every time I see him so I expect I'll need the larger set this time next year.

Great gear, but I did have to return the helmet twice (thrid time the charm) as the protective metal face mask was mis-aligned (obviously) with the rest of the helmet.
