I know the topic of whether or not an All Star game should be played as hard as a regular season game has been discussed here.

I've always thought it should be played just as hard and that feeling was confirmed in the past couple of weeks as I watched very small portions of both the NFL Pro Bowl and the NHL All Star Game.

Those games were completely worthless and painful to watch. Defenses basically stood still and made very little effort to stop the offense.

You can argue Pete Rose shouldn't have bowled over Ray Fosse but I'd much rather watch the players put out effort closer to that than what we had to watch in this year's games.

The NBA all-star game is the same way. The score is usually outrageous. Defenders play very passively.

I love the pomp and circumstance of the MLB all-star game introductions. Then if I have anything at all to do I don't watch the game. I'd rather watch the home run derby.

Back in the late 90's a Patriots rookie running back Robert Edwards blew out his knee in the all-star rookie flag football game on the beach. After running for over 1,000 yards he missed the next three seasons. So much for peripheral events at all-star games.
