Is there any data available re: the effective lifetime of a composite bat (scientific or anecdotal)? By composite, I am referring to adult sized aluminum/composites like the DeMarini CF-3 or Easton Stealth IMX.

From a purely layperson seat-of-the-pants point of view, all the composite bats we have had are great for 2-3 months and then significantly drop off in performance. There are some physical indications such as stress fractures but for the most part, the bats just go dead or break. Since we're looking at $300-400 per bat, I'd like to hear what other peoples experiences have been. Thanks.

My son's bats seem to last two years. He doesn't use them for BP. He uses wood in BP. His metal bats never see the texturized balls in batting cages. I'd say he's got 120-160 games from the bats. Another aspect of how long a bat lasts is when the kid grows out of it. When my son was younger he needed a bigger bat every year. I got him a 32/29 EXO this year knowing he'll probably move to a 33/30 next year.

Look for last years bats on sale when the new models come out. My son's new EXO was $290. A new one is $370. When the distributor realized he was out of 08's he shipped an 09. Great deal! The 2010's will come out about May.
